USS Mason passed Holywood (outbound) at 1620 this afternoon. Actually not the only USN visitor we have had this summer. This is USN Bruce C Heezen, a USN Pathfinder class Oceanographic Survey Ship. It has been in twice to my knowledge. (July and September)

Lovely shot which sent me off to learn more about Military Sealift Command, about which I knew very little.

They have a poster of their vessels:

I like this up-to-date gallery of Belfast visitors:

Given the interest in the warship movements in Belfast Lough last year. I thought this might be of interest to some. This photo of 19 warships moored in Bangor Bay during WW2 was in a book on the Belfast Blitz and is credited to PRONI

I was recently chatting to a chap* whose friend's father was postmaster in Bangor at the time of D-Day, and who did the  rounds of the moored ships each day with sacks of mail on a small boat.

One day the young lad accompanied his father on the boat, and the crew of a US warship hauled the lad up to their ship along with the mail.  He was shown around and grandly entertained and filled with all sorts of 'luxurious' foods before being winched back down at the end of his father's round, somewhat heavier.

* My brain is a sieve so I can't remember who.  Was it you, Mr Smyth?

Nice catch!

I had a friend who served on one of the class, fantastic-plastic hulls but 1940s-designed Deltic diesel engines! There was an extra one just to generate the power for the mine-hunting kit.

Nice catch.  Might explain EH10 ZH857 which has been kicking around at low-level over the channel for a couple of days.

Do we know why they're here or for how long?

No mention on the news so I'm guessing she won't be open to the public.

Called down earlier and this was the only vessel I could see.

F311, Roald Amundsen.  The helicopter, if aboard, was firmly behind shutters in the deck hangar.

Irish Navy supposed to be coming as well if they're not here already.
