April 2014 ICAO Type Designators List
« on: January 23, 2015, 08:25:46 AM »
Here, 84 pages of geeky fun:

http://cfapp.icao.int/Doc8643/reports/Part2-By%20Type%20Designator%28Decode%29.pdf

Bemused that the Grumman X-29 has an assigned designator, as does the Coot Aerocar.

And here's a Python library if you want to look-up designators programatically:

https://pypi.python.org/pypi/icao-aircrft/0.0.9

and here's the web service form that it uses:

http://cfapp.icao.int/Doc8643/search.cfm

And finally-finally here's a quick text version I knocked-up, simplified from the first document.

Should be suitable for importing into a database  though you'll probably want to normalize it somewhat.

Edit: fixed the WACO models which were comma-delimited instead of slash

Thanks, Smudge. I was just about to start a simplified list - you've
saved me the trouble.

I've just modified the file after finding an inconsistency in the WACO models, should be better now.

Do let me know if there are any other problems.

The single-aisle Airbus Neo series have recently been issued designators distinct from the original series.

A19N
A20N
A21N

No word from ICAO about how they're going to handle the confusion when Boeing updates the engines on the:

DOUGLAS   A-20 Havoc   A20

;)

The A330Neo series has so far just been issued A339 for the A330-900.

Designators for 737 MAX series.  Norwegian due to receive their first one in the next couple of weeks so keep your eyes open!

BOEING   737 MAX 7 BBJ     B37M
BOEING   737 MAX 7         B37M
BOEING   737 MAX 8 BBJ     B38M
BOEING   737 MAX 8         B38M
BOEING   737 MAX 9 BBJ     B39M
BOEING   737 MAX 9         B39M

however the ICAO still have some housekeeping to do, as they also have the MAX BBJs under the NG codes:

BOEING   BBJ (737 MAX 8 )   B738
BOEING   BBJ (737 MAX 9 )   B739

Presumably those will be purged eventually.
