Interesting news. However I would have preferred a better/improved one day show. In my opinion it has become repetitive and lost its interest to me. It's no longer a must attend but merely if it's got something I really want to see then I will go. I didn't attend last year as there was no real big attraction. Bar the Chinook it's the usual recycled acts or slight variations.
Problem being I'm not the audience that the organisers are trying to attract to the area. I'm there purely for the show.
Don't get me wrong I appreciate the efforts of the organisers and I would miss it if it wasn't held but I feel it needs a refresh (as does Portrush).

I don't think many shows are put together with the likes of us in mind. The last two proper 'enthusiast' shows would probably have been Newcastle 2014 and Portrush 2015. They are more put together as a festival than an airshow.

Moving to two day (if it is approved) is a good step. Newcastle has fallen behind Bray and Portrush. The question now is, is there going to be a change in displays? I have enjoyed Newcastle over the last few years, but barring one or two displays they are the same every year. Now, will it be the same displays again, just this time over two days, or will they make a move to shake things up?

I really enjoy Team Raven, especially since they moved to a 6 ship display. But there is only so many times you can see them before you want something different. I know Duffer had said they were looking into an international display for 2018. Hopefully that happens.

With the return of the Hunters to the skies, and pilots planning 2018 displays in them, I do hope we get one over. We've not had a Hunter display since Mid Air Squadron in 2014. And it will go a long way to pleasing those who say the show lacks jets.

I wonder if the date change could be to bring it back in line with Blackpool, it shared many aircraft with the Blackpool show until they moved their dates. Could save a lot by using aircraft based out of there.

My wishlist for 2018, I would like to see a good few of these.

BBMF Lancaster, Spitfire & Hurricane
RAF Tornado flypast (Yes the option is there for one)
Red Arrows
RAF Tucano display ( Rumored 2018 return)
Sally B
Hawker Hunter
Strikemaster pairs display or Jet Provost Display team
Gnat display
Blenheim
Catalina
Irish Air Corps.

If the International display is true, Frecce Tricolori or Patrouille Swiss

Haven't had a lineup worthy of a single afternoon in years and now they want to spread it over two?

Unless they pull in something exceptional, I'll pass.

A 2nd day has been on the cards since planning started after the show in 2014, I'm just glad they didn't resurrect their 2015 idea of moving day 2 to Warrenpoint.

The only reason I bother with Bray is that they invariably have at least "nerd pleaser" on the bill.

If Newcastle can do the same I'd be four square behind them, I have my doubts but would love to be proved wrong.
The Norwegian Starfighter would probably be top of my wish list.

The Starfighter had another successful flight on Friday. It would be great to get it over. I am worried however how the CAA would react to that.

Newcastle very possible going back to 1 day show. Council  have suggested a 12% cut to all festivals to fund other smaller ones.

Just heard the news myself that the council voted against the changes.

Mourne Observer reported option 2 was the likely one putting 2 days at risk. Down Recorder reporting today 2 day :)

Budget for Festival of Flight has been reduced by council. So it probably only going to be a one day airshow.

They really need to make up their minds.

Anyway, Newcastle 2018 is looking to be developed in partnership with Bray Airshow in 2018 and build for a closer partnership for 2019, and Rick Peacock Edwards is expected to be re-appointed flight director as per recomendation.

Rick Peacock-Edwards has been re-appointed Flight Director for 2018.

There is still no decision on the format for 2018 and 2 days is still a possibility. Officials will now work with Flight Director, and his team of 4 to see what programme can be delivered within the budget.

Work on a paper on how to partner and develop links with Bray is being drawn up and will be released in the coming weeks.

http://www.thedownrecorder.co.uk/pages/?title=Two-day_plans_for_airshow_are_in_doubt

I think they should just go 1 day, and use the expanded budget to get some new and fresh displays with an expanded display time on the Saturday. Over 2 days will just be a repeat of Newcastle 2015-2017 over 2 days,  where as a 1 day with £122000 plus sponsorship could attract a few bigger displays.

The RAF 100 National Aircraft tour will be the weekend before the Festival of Flight. Looks like the same weekend as the Hog’n’Bog Rally, which usually took place alongside the FoF. From what I am told, it will be static displays of a possible F35, Spitfire, Typhoon, Hawk T1 in Red Arrows colours & possible Chinook, depending on what gets sent over.  Quite possible the fibreglass replicas of the aircraft and not real aircraft.

https://www.rafa.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/February-Scotland-Northern-Ireland-Area-Newsletter.pdf

Still not decided if it will be 2 days or 1 day. Talks with possible displays are still negotiating for 2 days of flying (as of a few weeks ago) but no decision has been made public on this.

The UMVC will be attending and their listing is for 2 days.

Got a message from Down Festivals this afternoon, show will be 1 day. Saturday 11th August.

I'm ok with this, budget is greatly increased from last year meaning possibility of a better line up.

Good to have it back, probably the most requested display having missed last year. It looks like the RAF have moved the National Aircraft Tour to the weekend of the 11th also now.

While its not confirmed what they will bring to Newcastle yet, the national aircraft tour is using the following aircraft at events for static.

Quote
Aircraft on display:

Royal Aircraft Factory BE2c Biplane
Supermarine Spitfire MkXVI
Gloster Meteor F4 - The actual aircraft that captured the world air speed record of 616 mph in 1946
Harrier GR3
SAR Wessex Helicopter
Tornado GR1
DC3 Dakota
Chinook Helicopter
Typhoon Full Scale Replica
F35 (LII) Full Scale Replica
Sopwith Snipe Biplane
Supermarine Spitfire Mk1A
Lancaster Front Fuselage

I'll take the Harrier, F35, Tornado, F4 and Chinook, please :D I am sure the UAS will have their Spitfire there.

I'd say lack of space in New Castle will hinder this quite a bit
