So do I. I have looked at it over the years, especially linking it to the calendar with a view to have it recurring as a post on the front page but haven't been able to get it to work properly. If it proves popular I'll look in to it again :)

Thanks folks,I have been looking through my aviation books and magazines to find a few facts, hopefully some might even prove interesting!

I wonder would it better as a rolling thread for the month or a daily post? I think a rolling post like the overflights might be better,as there might not be any facts for every day. :-\

this thread is full of potentially fascinating info, but I am puzzled by the one about Dan Air?

I believe I saw them operating from BFS in the mid 1980's, was there a close down & restart or more than one 'Dan Air' if their last commercial flight was 1980?

Surely it was the last flight using the DH106 Comet rather than last ever flight of the airline.

16th Nov 1960.....The first flight of the Canadiar CL-44, a development of the Bristol Britannia.

You might wonder why the CL-44 had a different nose and flight-deck than the Britannia.

Atthe time Canadair was owned by General Dynamics and the parent company proposed grafting-on the nose of the Convair CV-880 to give a consistent brand-image.  It also looked a bit sportier.

And that's another useless Smudge Trivium.

18th Nov 1985..... Cessna is purchased by General Dynamics.( It was sold again to Textron Inc in 1992 ).

GD paid $660 million in 1985 for control of Cessna and the McAuley propellor subsidiary.

When it came to 1992, Dassault was in the bidding against Textron as they really wanted the Citation line as the entry-level supplement to the Falcons.  But Textron outbid them at $600 million...

Inflation Calculator (http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/) says that $660 million in 1985 dollars would be $860 million in 1992, so it was a very poor outcome for GD; lost a quarter-billion dollars on that gamble:

Other odd mid-1980s purchases which didn't work out:

Chrysler buying Gulfstream
Lear Siegler buying Piper

The only one that survived was Raytheon's purchase of Beech.

November is a bit sparse isn't it.

Found this one:

Quote
On 21 November 1783, the first free (untethered) flight by humans was made by Pilâtre, together with the Marquis François-Laurent d’Arlandes; they landed five miles away, some twenty-five minutes after launching, reaching a height of 900 meters. The balloon was propelled by an iron furnace.

https://www.icao.int/secretariat/PostalHistory/aviation_history_human_flights_with_balloons.htm

Also first flight of the Grumman F9F Panther, the Ironwork's first jet, in 1947.  How far we've come in 70 years, back to blending the wing into the fuselage :)

Oh I missed a few days!  Some follow-ups:

24th:
BOAC's RT callsign SPEEDBIRD was complemented by BEA's BEELINE which was dropped after the 1975 merger which formed BA.  It is now used by Brussels Airlines :)

25th:
In November 1938 one of the RAF's Hendons went for an unauthorised nocturnal jaunt at the hands of a couple of erks.  It didn't end well for the aircraft, K5094, nor for the LACs who received a one-year detention each.

That was one of only two Hendons written-off!  However they were quickly replaced by Wellingtons from that time onwards and were all gone after barely two years of service.

One might wonder why it took them until 1983 to deliver a Malibu.

The 1979 prototype was an aerodynamic shell.  It was the first mass-market general aviation aircraft to be designed entirely using CAD and Piper were a bit cautious and wanted to verify it in flight.

The full-up pressurised production variant flew in August 1982.  Still looks good today.

Stalled on take-off from Gander.  Sadly the cause was never established, in fact the investigation was one of the few in history that had a dissenting opinion filed.

Even more tragically, Arrow Air had been put on an FAA watch-list in 1984 but the DoD renewed its air-charter contract for the following years

Aiming this at Rutan, not AT who keeps digging up the good stuff:

17th Dec 2003.....Burt Rutan`s " SpaceShip One " becomes the first privately designed and manufactured manned aircraft to exceed the speed of sound.

... in level flight.   Douglas had actually dived a DC-8 beyond Mach 1 in 1961 and then delivered it to Canadian Pacific as CF-CPG.

Cessna also took a prototype Citation X through the barrier during testing, they were "only" required to go to 0.99 per the FAA but thought they'd push the nose a bit steeper.  Edit: Mach 1.18 apparently.

Now if Rutan had claimed to have the first private flight "beyond transonic" I wouldn't have been able to engage the pedantry machine!

Much of the USA's current strategic capability dates to that 1981 plan; B-1B, Trident II, ALCM-B, TLAM.  Which was an inversion from the Carter Administration's emphasis on MX ( Peacekeeper ) ICBM.

In fact they are all still in service except Peacekeeper!  There's bound to be a pithy joke in that irony.

Here's a thing I only learned recently; after WW2 the Soviets refloated and refitted the scuttled German carrier Graf Zeppelin!  They commissioned it as PB-101 and played around with it until sinking it in 1947 with 24 bombs and two torpedoes.  Apparently the data collected went both into the files for designing carriers as well as those on how to sink them.

The hulk was rediscovered in 2006.

I've been looking forward to doing this one :)

32 December 1980: just after midnight the Learavia Learfan prototype N626BL made its 17 minute maiden flight, thereby qualifying for another £50 million of UK government funding for the programme conditional on flying in 1980.

They nearly missed the chance for continued funding when a fire-bottle discharged as they started-up on the evening of 31 December and it took several hours to reset the aircraft.

Whilst uk.gov was complicit in accepting the faked date, the USPS stamps on the first-flight covers were stamped JAN 1 1981.  Bureaucratic spoilsports!

If you blend all the wine gums in a food processor you can drink them all at once  :-*

Of course the Learfan oddness didn't stop with its first flight.  Once the scheme had collapsed the factory in Newtownabbey was sold to FG Wilson for just £500,000 into the public coffers; they then flipped it on to SRC Composites for £3 million, creating a bit of a scandal in Parliament.

Allegedly SRC was an Iraqi front company to make missile bodies, that all fell apart quickly and the factory went to Shorts for £1 million.

01 Jan 1934.....Deutsche Luft Hansa changes it`s name to Lufthansa.

After the war there was an East / West German spat over the name.

1. Deutsche Lufthansa GmbH der DDR was formed in the East 1952 but didn't fly until December 1955

2. Deutsche Lufthansa AG was formed in the West in 1954, when a holding company bought the rights to the name, and started flying in April 1955

A ruling at the ICJ in the Hague in 1958 awarded the name to the West German company, after which the Eastern Lufthansa was folded into charter operator Interflug.

Incidentally the word 'Hansa' doesn't mean anything to do with airlines, it's a reference to the Hanseatic League representing union between smaller pre-war airlines.
