First ping I had was 11:24 and they had already been busy by then!  Hope they had taken more grub with them than Sandwiches, Egg.

Bunch of Tu-95s keeping the QRA on their toes it seems...

The BEARS have been exceptionally busy of late, if you've any sort of Russian they do operate HF nets en-clair.   I can count to ten,  order vodka and curse acceptably, beyond that haven't a clue unfortunately.

I'm fairly sure they carry, or at least can carry a spare crew. You'd like to think so anyway.

I know that the tradition of "honkers" still exists for eating, like the Tower of London ravens or cups of tea, the tradition of the RAF's (or contracted civvies) low-performance aircraft having a facility for some form of stew/curry/hot mess that no normal person would eat on pain of death shall surely endure.

Yes, today it seems that the Bears dragged our valiant Typhoon pilots on a merry tour of the GIUK.

Perhaps we should hang a couple of ASRAAMs off a Voyager and use it as a long-range interceptor.  Rather more agreeable with the pilot's bladder.

I picture the eurofighter pilots flying off after the TU-95's dressed in appropriate attire

Probably no harm in remembering that a BEAR  can conceivably nuke London, or indeed Belfast from the circuit at their home plate.

If they come playing down this way, they're kibble. But they don't need to.

It was much easier when they just changed the Bikini Status and we didn't have to concern ourselves with why..

I think the same thing happened again today. I tracked a Voyager over East coast England and smaller planes that were showing as Dassult Falcons but I'm sure they were fighters

I couldn't find the famous Pepsi or Playboy photos from a quick search, so here's another Tu-95 photo in the meantime

This appears to have been the source:

That would be the Thursday War.  Happens just about weekly, and they are indeed Falcons.

I wonder what sort of height the bears fly at? Flying through todays busy skies with no filed flight-plan or communication with ATC sounds a bit crazy!! But I suppose if you have a couple of Typhoons flying beside you you don't have to worry about other traffic!!

Now this is a proper Tu-95 interceptor; endurance, high-altitude agility, a desk where the crew can eat sandwiches...

With a short break during the period that they couldn't afford to carry buns kero to BEARs they've been "at it" on a regular basis for 50 odd years.

I reckon that our "new" Rivet Joints have taken over from the Vulcans, Nimrods & Canberras in playing round in international airspace adjacent to interesting tourist resorts round the Baltic & Kara seas too.

All part of the great game.

Mr Putin is going to end up on the naughty step for an extended period if he keeps this up ;D
In all seriousness I think he/and or his henchmen are dangerous.

Yeah, he probably is. But have you checked his domestic popularity ratings?  ;)

Personally I'm a great deal more concerned about a European regime whose militia marches under a sunwheel flag than I am about BEAR drivers doing what they've been doing since before I was born...  But horses for courses i suppose.

I agree that the Bear intercepts are really just sabre rattling, and as you mention they have been doing it for many years.
I recall a TV ad that used to be on approx mid 1970`s about the RAF intercepting Russian aircraft-I had a quick look online but have not found it yet,but this is similar.

I think this is it................https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9D2wacVbk3A  This features the TU-16 Badger. :)

The greatest thrill (if you want to put it like that) I ever got from the aviation hobby was working out, in concert with other enthusiasts via 'phone and letter, operational UHF frequencies.

This would have been mid/late eighties with the "kit" being AOR 2001's and (as in my case) Black Jaguar handhelds (nice radio, but it had an enormous 'birdie' on 120.0 which was EGAA approach at the time).

The two things we all searched for were U2 & SR71 discretes and the studs/TADs in use for QRA.

There were no shortage of the latter.  I feel better knowing that Ivan feels confident enough to push his luck than I would if he disappeared altogether.
