Well it`s tinsel,and untangling the dodgy tree lights time again-and a new month for the Flight Bites.


1st Dec 1911....Royal Navy Lt Arthur Longmore lands a float-equipped Short Improved S.27 in the River Medway,becoming the first in the UK to take off from land and make a successful water landing.

1st Dec 1919....The Wright-Martin Corporation changes its name to Wright Aeronautical Corporation.Early aircraft manufacturing companies often merged and names changed.

1st Dec 1925....The Boeing Airplane Co. delivers the first of 10 FB-1 s to the Navy.This single-seat land biplane is the Navy version of the Army PW-9 fighter.

1st Dec 1932....First flight of the Bernard 200 T,a French 3-4 seat tourer.Powered by a 120hp de Havilland Gipsy III inverted four-cylinder air-cooled piston engine, driving a two-blade prop.

1st Dec 1932....First flight of the Heinkel He 70 is a mail plane and fast passenger aircraft.It was a leading design for its day,setting eight world speed records by the beginning of 1933.

1st Dec 1934....The first airway traffic control center is opened in Newark, N.J., operated by staff of Eastern Air Lines,United Air Lines,American Airlines and TWA.

1st Dec 1969....The first legislation to limit aircraft noise levels at airports is introduced in U. S. Federal Air Regulation, Part 36.

1st Dec 1970....First flight of the Dassault Mystère/Falcon 10,an early corporate jet.It was operated by civil and military users,and it remains a popular business jet on the second hand market.

1st Dec 1976....First flight of the Ahrens AR 404,a prototype US civil transport high-wing monoplane,powered by four turboprop engines.It was designed to carry 30 passengers,only two were built.

1st Dec 1977....First flight of the Lockheed Have Blue,a proof of concept demonstrator that preceded the production F-117 Nighthawk stealth aircraft.Both prototypes were lost due to mechanical problems.

1st Dec 1995....First flight of the Air Tractor AT-602,an agricultural aircraft.Powerplant: 1 × Pratt & Whitney PT6A-60AG turboprop, 1,050 hp

1st Dec 2001....Cpt. Bill Compton brings Trans World Airlines Flight 220,an MD-83,into St. Louis International bringing to an end 76 years of TWA operations following TWA’s purchase by American Airlines.

1st Dec 2011....A CIA RQ-170 Sentinel unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) on a reconnaissance mission malfunctions,veers out of control,and flies deep into Iran,where it runs out of fuel and crashes.

2nd Dec 1919....First flight of the Handley Page Type W.The W.8,W.9 and W.10 were British two and three-engine biplane airliners.It the world's first airliner to be designed with an on-board lavatory.

2nd Dec 1937....First flight of the Brewster F2A Buffalo,a US fighter.It was built in three variants for the USN:F2A-1,F2A-2 and F2A-3.It was also used by Finland,the RAF and the RAAF.

2nd Dec 1939....New York’s La Guardia Airport opened for service.Construction began in 1937 onto a metal reinforcing framework.The framework below the airport still causes magnetic interference on the                                   compasses of outgoing aircraft:signs on the airfield warn pilots about the problem.

2nd Dec 1941....Hitler orders the Luftwaffe’s Fliegerkorps II to redeploy from the Soviet Union to Sicily and North Africa to paralyze Allied sea traffic in the Mediterranean.

2nd Dec 1943....First Canadian-built Mosquito aircraft saw action over Berlin with RAF 139 Squadron.They were widely used by the RAF Pathfinder Force,marking targets for the main night-time bombers.

2nd Dec 1945....First flight of the Handley Page HP.81 Hermes,a four engine British civilian airliner,related to Handley Page's Hastings military transport.29 were built, serving briefly with BOAC.

2nd Dec 1945....First flight of the Bristol Type 170 Freighter,a British twin-engine freighter/airliner.It was a stop-gap project to provide work while the Bristol Brabazon was under development.

2nd Dec 1948....First flight of the Beechcraft T-34 Mentor,a US single-engine prop,military trainer.Over 2300 were built,with many still in service.The Turboprop T-34C Turbo-Mentor replaced it.

2nd Dec 1950....400 aircraft from seven U.N. aircraft carriers support U.N. ground forces with air strikes while USAF aircraft drop supplies in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir,Korea.

2nd Dec 1965....The USS Enterprise becomes the first nuclear-powered warship to see combat,launching air strikes at the Viet Cong near Bien Hoa.

2nd Dec 1976....The Boeing 747 SCA,an ex-American Airlines airliner which has been adapted to carry the US reusable Space Shuttle,makes its flight after extensive modifications.

2nd Dec 1986....Pacific Western Airlines merged with Canadian Pacific Airlines to form Canadian Airlines.It in turn merged with Air Canada 1st Jan 2001.

2nd Dec 1988....Launch:Space Shuttle Atlantis STS-27 at 09:30:34 EST.Mission highlights:3rd classified DoD mission;Lacrosse 1 deployment.Heat shielding was damaged during lift-off,but landed safely.

2nd Dec 1990....Launch:Space Shuttle Columbia STS-35 at 1:49:01 am EST.Mission highlights: Use of ASTRO-1 observatory.Crew of seven was led by Vance D. Brand,he commanded 3 Shuttle missions.

2nd Dec 1992....Launch:Space Shuttle Discovery STS-53 at 13:24:00 UTC.Mission highlights:Classified 10th and final DoD mission.Likely deployment of SDS2 satellite.Commanded by David M. Walker.

2nd Dec 1993....Launch:Space Shuttle Endeavour STS-61 at 10:53 am EDT.Mission highlights:Hubble Space Telescope servicing.Crew of 7 was led by former USAF fighter pilot Richard Oswalt Covey.

2nd Dec 2012....Syria announces that Damascus International Airport has reopened and is running scheduled flights after being closed for three days due to fighting in the area.

3rd Dec 1942....A Vickers Wellington specially equipped with electronic measuring equipment collects the frequency of the UHF-band airborne Lichtenstein radar used by German night fighters.

3rd Dec 1945....A Mk5 Sea Vampire became the first jet aircraft to take off and land from an aircraft carrier,HMS Ocean.Flown by Cpt Eric "Winkle" Brown,the most-decorated pilot in the history of the RN.

3rd Dec 1968....First flight of the Anahuac Tauro,a Mexican agricultural aircraft.Powerplant:1 × Jacobs R-755-SM seven-cylinder radial engine,350 hp.12 Examples were built.

3rd Dec 1971....Start of the Indo-Pakistani War,Lasting just 13 days,it is one of the shortest wars in history.The Indian Air Force loses 72 aircraft and the Pakistan Air Force 94 aircraft.

3rd Dec 1973....Pioneer 10 sends back the first close-up images of Jupiter.The photos would later be rejected on Airliners.net for “bad distance”. Raspberry noises to them.

3rd Dec 1985....The ATR-42 twin-turboprop,short-haul regional airliner developed and manufactured in France and Italy,designated as the ATR 42-300,was delivered to French launch customer Air Littoral.

3rd Dec 1999....NASA loses radio contact with the Mars Polar Lander moments before the spacecraft enters the Martian atmosphere.Matt Damon found it later.

3rd Dec 2003....First flight of the Honda HA-420 HondaJet,the first aircraft developed by the Honda Aircraft Company.It is a twin-engine,six-seat light business jet.

3rd Dec 2004....The 500th Boeing 777 is rolled out.The 777 will reach 500 airplanes delivered faster than any other twin-aisle airplane in history.1571 had been built by Sept 2018.

3rd Dec 2005....XCOR Aerospace makes the first ever manned rocket aircraft delivery of US Mail in Mojave,California.They used a EZ-Rocket,a Rutan Long-EZ homebuilt aircraft fitted with two rocket engines.

4th Dec 1940....Control of RAF Coastal Command is transferred to the Royal Navy,although Coastal Command remains part of the RAF.Air protection of Allied merchant shipping begins to improve.

4th Dec 1944....First flight of the Bristol Brigand,an anti-shipping/ground attack/dive bomber.147 were built and were used by the RAF in Malaya and Kenya.It was a replacement for the Beaufighter.

4th Dec 1950....A Pan American World Airways Boeing 307 Strato-Clipper sets a new record time for a commercial flight from Honolulu,to Los Angeles California,making the trip in 7 hrs 20 mins.

4th Dec 1952....First flight of the Grumman S-2 Tracker,an anti-submarine warfare for the USN.It had twin radial engines,a high wing that could be folded for storage on carriers,and tricycle undercarriage.

4th Dec 1955....Glenn L. Martin,pilot,engineer and founder of the Glenn L. Martin Company,dies at age 69.He was an early American aviation pioneer.

4th Dec 1958....First flight of the Baade 152,a German prototype 4 jet airliner.Three were built;two of them were flown on three test flights,but were scrapped after the first prototype crashed.

4th Dec 1958....The last Avro CF-100 was rolled from the production line at Malton,Ontario.The CF-100 was the only Canadian-designed fighter to enter mass production.

4th Dec 1961....The National Air and Space Museum receives the Presidential VC-54C Douglas C-54 transport “Sacred Cow” used by US Presidents Roosevelt and Truman.

4th Dec 1991....Pan Am,bankrupt since August 11,is finally dissolved after 63 years of operation.The airline is credited for many innovations that shaped the international airline industry.

5th Dec 1919....Colombian airline Avianca is founded,it was initially registered under the name SCADTA.It has been the national airline and flag carrier of Colombia since it`s formation.

5th Dec 1941....First flight of the Kawanishi E15K Shiun,a single-engined Japanese recon floatplane.It was powered by a 1,460 hp Mitsubishi MK4D Kasei radial driving two Contra-rotating two-bladed props.

6th Dec 1917...Chikuhei Nakajima and Seibi Kawanishi found the Japan Aeroplane Manufacturing Work Company Ltd.It is the first aircraft manufacturing company in Japan.

6th Dec 1928...North American Aviation Inc.is founded,a major American aerospace manufacturer,responsible for a number of historic aircraft,T-6 Texan,P-51,B-25,F-86,X-15,XB-70 and Apollo,and the                                         Space Shuttle.

7th Dec 1928....First flight of the de Havilland DH.75 Hawk Moth,a four-seat cabin monoplane.It was designed as a light transport or air-taxi for export.Just 8 of the type were completed.

7th Dec 1940....First flight of the Fairey Barracuda,a carrier-borne torpedo and dive bomber.It had a crew of three and replaced the Fairey Swordfish and Albacore biplanes.Over 2600 were built.

7th Dec 1941....The Imperial Japanese Navy makes a devastatingly successful surprise attack using almost 400 aircraft on the US Navy fleet at Pearl Harbor.The US declares war on Japan.

7th Dec 1941....First flight of the Nakajima A6M2-N,a single-crew floatplane based on the Mitsubishi A6M Zero Model 11.It was developed to defend remote bases,and entered service in 1942.

8th Dec 1941....Japanese air attacks destroy many aircraft of the USAAF`s Far East Air Force in the Philippine Islands.Japanese aircraft also begin attacks on Hong Kong, Guam,and Wake Island.

8th Dec 1945....First flight of the Bell 47 prototype,a single engine multi-purpose light helicopter.More than 5,600 Bell 47s were produced,some under license in Italy,UK,and Japan.

8th Dec 1962....First flight of the Bell 206A Jetranger,part of a family of two-bladed,single/twin-engined helicopters.The JetRanger was a huge success with over 7,300 built in civil and military versions.

8th Dec 1965....The McDonnell Douglas DC-9,a twin-engine,single-aisle jet airliner,enters service with launch customer Delta Airlines.DC-9-based airliners including the MD-80, MD-90 and Boeing 717.

9th Dec 1909....Dr.Henry W.Walden makes the first flight with his triplane known as the Walden III.It is powered by a three-cylinder,22-HP Anzani engine.

9th Dec 1946....The first powered flight of the Bell X-1.A rocket engine–powered supersonic research project.Several glide flights had been flown after the aircraft was dropped from a B-29.

9th Dec 1951....First flight of the Fiat G.80,a military jet trainer.The Aeronautica Militare found it unsuitable for their requirements and did not purchase it in quantity,just 5 were built.

The first one burned-out in a fire during trials at Felixstowe when a worker left an onboard generator running without opening its cooling shutters.

The second was cut-up at Queen's Island after BOAC showed precisely no interest in it :(

18th Dec 1908....Wilbur Wright at Camp d'Auvours,east of Le Mans,flies 62 miles in 1 h 54 min,climbing  to 110 m (360 ft) – A new world record.

18th Dec 1933....First flight of the Northrop XFT,a single engine prototype monoplane fighter for the USN.It exhibited poor handling,and was rejected.

18th Dec 1934....Boeing subsidiary Stearman Aircraft,delivers its first Stearman Model 75 Kaydet to the military.It will become the most common trainer in service,with over 10,600 built.

18th Dec 1935....First flight of the Miles M.7 Nighthawk,a single engine training and communications monoplane.Powered by a 200 hp de Havilland Gipsy Six piston engine.Just six were completed.

18th Dec 1940....First flight of the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver,a carrier-based dive bomber,it replaced the Douglas SBD Dauntless.It had a reputation for difficult handling but over 7000 were built.

18th Dec 1947....First flight of the Chase YC-122 Avitruc,a military twin engine transport produced in limited numbers in the US.Initially designed as a glider,but definitively in powered form.

18th Dec 1969....The England-Australia Air Race is flown in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Smith brothers'flight.It is won by W.J.Bright and F.L.Buxton in a Britten-Norman Islander.

18th Dec 1970....Airbus Industries is formally established to develop the Airbus A300;it comprises Aérospatiale,Deutsche Airbus,Fokker and Hawker Siddeley.

18th Dec 1982....Hans-Ulrich Rudel, German pilot,dies.Rudel was a Stuka dive-bomber pilot during WW II and is famous for being the most highly decorated German serviceman of the war.                                                              He was the only person to be awarded the Knight’s Cross with Golden Oak Leaves,Swords,and Diamonds.

18th Dec 1986....The ill-fated Nimrod AEW project was finally cancelled after numerous delays and setbacks.In its place,7 Boeing E-3 Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft were ordered.

18th Dec 1992....First flight of the MD Helicopters MD Explorer.A light twin utility NOTAR helicopter.It was the first McDonnell Douglas heli to incorporate the NOTAR system from its initial design.

18th Dec 2003....First flight of the ShinMaywa US-2,a four engine Japanese large STOL amphibious aircraft designed for (SAR) work.It can be used as fire fighter taking 15 tonnes of water.

19th Dec 1908...The world’s first aerodrome,Port-Aviation,is opened 12 miles (19 km) outside of Paris at Viry-Chatillon.

19th Dec 1910...Imperial Japanese Army Cpt Yoshitoshi Tokugawa makes the first heavier-than-air flight in Japan piloting a Farman III biplane.

19th Dec 1919...Work starts on Japanese Hosho,the first designed & built aircraft carrier.It was launched and completed earlier than HMS Hermes.It entered service in 1922,and was scrapped in 1946.

19th Dec 1928...Harold Pitcairn flies his first autogiro.He bought the right to license Juan de la Ciervas autogyro patents.He also founded Pitcairn Aviation,later to become Eastern Airlines.

19th Dec 1945...First flight of the Grumman AF Guardian,the first purpose-built anti-submarine warfare (ASW) carrier-based aircraft to enter service with the United States Navy,389 built.

19th Dec 1978...First flight of the Beriev A-50,a Soviet airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft based on the Ilyushin Il-76 transport.It has a crew of 15,approx 40 were built.

19th Dec 1980...New York Air commenced services from New York LaGuardia,their fleet was in a red color scheme with a stylized "apple" logo on the tail.In 1987 they merged with Continental Airlines.

19th Dec 1986...Columbia mission STS-61 C is aborted at 31 secs due to a problem with the solid rocket booster.It launched Jan 12th,it the last successful shuttle mission before the Challenger accident.

19th Dec 1999...Launch:Space Shuttle Discovery STS-103 at 19:50:00 EST.Mission highlights:Hubble Space Telescope servicing.The crew of 7 was led by former USAF Col.Curtis L.Brown,Jr.

20th Dec 1916....The US Army Balloon School is established in Fort Omaha,Nebraska.It had to be somewhere isolated because of the annoying squeaky noises tying the balloons. :-)

20th Dec 1928....Australian George Wilkins and Lt Carl Eielson make the first flight over Antarctica.They use a Lockheed Vega for the 10-hour flight.Eielson died in an air crash in Siberia 1929.

20th Dec 1934....Lieutenant Richard L. Burke flying a Grumman JF Duck,sets a world seaplane speed record of 308.750 kph or 191.848 mph over a 3 km,1.9 mile test course.

20th Dec 1941....The Nationalist Chinese Air Force’s American Volunteer Group,the "Flying Tigers",sees its first combat near Kunming,China.The C/O was "Old Leatherface", Claire Lee Chennault.

20th Dec 1942....A de Havilland Mosquito of RAF Bomber Command uses the Oboe blind bombing targeting system operationally for the first time,in a raid against a power station at Lutterade in the Netherlands.

20th Dec 1943....First flight of the Heinkel He 177 V102,a four-engined prototype for the Heinkel He 177B heavy bomber,using four Daimler-Benz DB 603 powerplants.

20th Dec 1989....The US invasion of Panama,begins with over 300 U.S. military aircraft involved.The USAF F-117A Nighthawk and the U.S.Army's AH-64 Apache attack helicopter make their combat debuts.

20th Dec 2004....An Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor crashes on takeoff at Nellis Air Force Base,Nevada,prompting the U.S. Air Force to ground most of its other F-22s.The pilot ejected safely.

20th Dec 2012....A Red Wings Airlines Tupolev Tu-204-100B suffers a brake failure on landing at Novosibirsk,Russia,and overruns the runway by 350 meters (1,150 feet).

21st Dec 1910....Hélène Dutrieu becomes the first winner of the Coupe Femina for a non-stop flight of 104 miles in 2 hrs 35 mins.She was also a pro-cyclist racer and stuntwoman.She died aged 83.

21st Dec 1914....Royal Naval Air Service Wing Commander Charles R. Samson conducts history’s first night bombing raid,attacking Ostend,Belgium.He used a Maurice Farman biplane.

21st Dec 1914....The UK is bombed by a German aircraft for the first time – A Taube drops two bombs near the Admiralty Pier,Kent.

21st Dec 1936....First flight of the Junkers Ju 88,a twin-engined multirole aircraft.It served as a bomber,dive bomber,night fighter,torpedo bomber,reconn aircraft,heavy fighter and as a flying bomb.

21st Dec 1945....Ethiopian Airlines is founded,it began operations on 8 April 1946,expanding to international flights in 1951.It was managed by TWA and five Douglas C-47s were bought to begin with.

21st Dec 1968....Apollo 8,the first manned mission to the moon,is launched from the Kennedy Space Center.The three-astronaut crew are—Frank Borman,James Lovell,and William Anders.

21st Dec 1970....First flight of the Grumman F-14 Tomcat,a twin-engine,two-seat,twin-tail,variable-sweep wing fighter,developed for the USN.How many cushions did Tiny Tom need to see out?

21st Dec 1978....Weird Family..Robin Oswald hijacks TWA Flight 541,a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 with 87 people on board, threatening to blow it up,if her father is not released from prison.
                         The aircraft makes an emergency landing at Williamson CR Airport in Marion,Illinois.Authorities talk her into surrendering without further incident.
                         Her father,Garrett B. Trapnell,had been imprisoned for a 1972 airliner hijacking and her mother,Barbara Ann Oswald,had been killed when she hijacked a helicopter in May 1978                                                   in order to help him escape from prison.

21st Dec 1979....First flight of the NASA AD-1,designed by Burt Rutan.It which successfully demonstrated an aircraft wing that could be pivoted obliquely from zero to 60 degrees during flight.

21st Dec 1988....First flight of the Antonov An-225 Mriya,a six engine strategic airlifter.It is the worlds largest and heaviest aircraft.It was developed to transport the Buran spaceplane.

21st Dec 1988....Pan Am Flight 103,a Boeing 747,is blown apart by a terrorist bomb over Lockerbie,All 259 people on board and 11 on the ground are killed.

21st Dec 1990....Clarence Leonard "Kelly" Johnson,aeronautical and systems engineer dies at the age of 80.He was boss of the Lockheed Skunk Works producing aircraft such as the U2 and SR-71 and more.

21st Dec 1993....First flight of the Cessna Citation X,a US bizjet.It received its type certification on June 3,1996 and its the first Cessna aircraft to be powered by a Rolls-Royce engine. 

21st Dec 2007....First flight of the OMA SUD Skycar,an Italian twin-engined five-seat piston-engined pusher configuration monoplane.The engines are mounted on the trailing edge of each mainplane. 

21st Dec 2009....Spanish airline Air Comet ceases operations.It mainly operated long-haul charter services from Madrid and Palma de Mallorca to destinations in America and the Caribbean.

22nd Dec 1910....British aviation pioneer Cecil Grace vanishes over the English Channel during a flight from Calais to Dover.He was flying a Short S.27.

22nd Dec 1930....First flight of the Tupolev TB-3,a four engine heavy bomber.It was also used as a troop transport/cargo aircraft,and Aeroflot operated it as a civilian passenger aircraft.

22nd Dec 1936....First flight of the North American XB-21,a twin engine prototype bomber.It was evaluated by the USAAC against the Douglas B-18 Bolo.It was regarded as too expensive,just one was built.

22nd Dec 1938....First flight of the de Havilland DH.95 Flamingo,a twin-engined high-wing monoplane airliner.The RAF used them for transport and general comms duties.14 aircraft were completed.

22nd Dec 1939....First flight of the Petlyakov VI-100,a Soviet prototype high-altitude interceptor/fighter.The design was modified into the Petlyakov PB100 dive bomber.

22nd Dec 1941....First flight of the Consolidated TBY Sea Wolf,a USN torpedo bomber.It suffered substantial delays and never saw combat.180 were built before cancellation after VJ Day.

22nd Dec 1941....First flight of the Fairey Firefly,a carrier-borne fighter.It proved to be sturdy,and docile in carrier operations.It had a Rolls-Royce Griffon IIB liquid-cooled V12 engine.

22nd Dec 1945....First flight of the Beechcraft Bonanza,a 6 seater civil utility aircraft.Still in production by Beechcraft,longer than any other airplane in history.Over 17,000 have been built.

22nd Dec 1945....Two Boeing C-97 Stratofreighters,on their first peacetime mission,carry 190 servicemen from Seattle to Chicago in time for Christmas.

22nd Dec 1949....First flight of the North American F-86D Sabre,a fighter/interceptor development of the Sabre,with a larger fuselage,larger afterburner engine,and a distinctive nose radome.

22nd Dec 1961....U.S.Army helicopters engage in their first combat operation in Vietnam.8th Transportation Company makes several airlifts of SVA ground troops to landing zones south of Saigon.

22nd Dec 1964....First flight of the Lockheed D-21,a supersonic reconn drone.Designed to be launched from the back of a M-21 carrier aircraft,a variant of the Lockheed A-12 aircraft.Canceled 1971.

22nd Dec 1964....First flight of the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird,a Mach 3+ strategic reconn aircraft.Developed as a black project from the Lockheed A-12,it served with the USAF from 1964 to 1998.

22nd Dec 1966....First flight of the Northrop HL-10,a rocket powered lifting body technology demonstrator.Tyically it was dropped from a B-52 at 45,000ft at 450 mph.It had 100 secs of powered flight.

22nd Dec 1976....First flight of the Ilyushin Il-86,a Soviet short/medium-range wide-body jet airliner.It was the USSR's first wide-body and the world's second four-engined wide-body.106 were built.

22nd Dec 1977....First flight of the Antonov An-72,a twinjet Soviet STOL transport.It uses the Coandă effect,utilizing engine exhaust gases blown over the wing's upper surface to boost lift.

22nd Dec 1979....First flight of the Socata TB 30 Epsilon,a light military trainer,a tandem two-seater.Handling was poor,and a redesigned protoype flew on 31 October 1980,and all issues resolved.

22nd Dec 1998....First flight of the Beechcraft Premier I,a light business jet,designed to compete with the Cessna CitationJet series.292 were produced by the time production ended in 2012.

22nd Dec 2001....American Airlines Flight 63,a Boeing 767,Richard Reid,attempts to detonate explosives hidden in his shoes,he is subdued by two crew and passengers.The plane lands safely in Boston.
