Any info on Portrush 2003 & 2004 displays?
« on: January 04, 2016, 10:58:16 PM »
As you know I run the AirshowsNI website.

In 2016 I hope to expand this website massively (Proper domain name coming next week hopefully)  and one of the projects is a historical record of each show and what displayed. (Keeping this to Newcastle and Portrush for now, might add Newtownards if I can get dates and years it operated between)

I have everything from Newcastle (2010-2015) and Portrush 2005-2015 (took a while lol) but can't seem to find anything much from 2004 and nothing from 2003.  Do any of you have any information as to what displayed in the early years (2003 was the first year I believe)

2004

Douglas DC-3C-R-1830-90C
Red Arrows
Utterly Butterlys wing walkers
Nimrod
Spitfire
Sukhoi Su-26,
Tornado GR4

2003

Nothing yet....

Thanks :)

2003 was terrible because of the weather-Hawker Hunter crashed enroute back to it`s base in Exeter in North Wales.Pilot Chris Penrice was a BAe Test Pilot,he ejected but was injured.
Red Arrows did a brief display,or maybe even just a single pass-cloud base was very low and the aircraft could not see each other.

I will have to put my thinking cap on as to what else (if anything) displayed in 2003.
Pretty sure I have photos from 2004-will check for you.

Thanks, didn't know about the Hunter crash.

Only thing from 2003 I can find is a press release for 'Northern Ireland Air Spectacular 2003' http://www.colerainebc.gov.uk/news/news_item.php?id=151

First one was in 2002 ( 2nd June) as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations.
"Jubilee Air Show" Programme was;
Yak52
IAC CASA
RAF Tornado
IAC Dauphin
BBMF
RAF Sea King
Bucker Jungmann
RAF Nimrod
RAF Falcons

Weather was crap and not all items made it.

Northern Ireland Air Spectacular 2003 (May 31 & Jun 1)
RAF Red Arrows - the infamous "once round the bay and RTB"
RAF Tornado
BBMF
RAF Hawk
Bucker Jungmann
Extra 300
Hunter (emergency during RTB)
RAF Sea King
IAC Dauphin
RAF Falcons
Wild Geese
IAC CASA
Utterly Butterly
Canberra
Hercules
Fokker DR1

Again weather scuppered alot of the programme

I've added the Newcastle section. The Portrush one will look similar when complete (though bigger) https://newcastleairshow.wordpress.com/historical-archives/

I went through all the old threads on here to find the line ups of some of the shows, as well as photo archives on the internet.

The Hawker Hunter that crashed returning from Portrush was a Mk6.A Reg G-BVVC.

As regards 2003 the following were no shows: BBMF, RAF Sea King, Extra 300, IAC Dauphin, IAC Casa, Canberra. The single HS Hawk from No 100 Sqn was a single pass on the Sunday - does anyone have a serial for that one?

Phew, all done. Many thanks for the help. I went through all the old topics on here and used Irish Air Pics also to confirm displays for some shows.

Historical Archives for Portrush and Newcastle are now finished on the website. If you see anything missing or wrong, let me know, please.

Going to try and do Bray next.

That won't be until next week before I even bother to begin!!

Well done!  It's great to have an historical list of what attended.

I wish I'd made notes at the old Ards airshows but I was too busy gawping.  At the aeroplanes, of course.

Agreed, excellent work, but I am pretty sure there were much more no-shows than what is indicated so far.
Portrush has been very unlucky over the years with no-shows for various reasons, usually poor weather at venue, enroute or both.
I will PM you any updates. :)

For the Portrush 2013 listing Red Star Rebels (Pair of L29 Delfins) failed to appear as they landed at an airfield which closed at the weekend!  ::)
