Seafire Crash Site County Tyrone
« on: August 02, 2010, 07:51:41 PM »
On 10th October 1945 Sub Lt Hornby of the Royal New Zealand Naval Reserve attached to 718 Sqn Fleet Air Arm took off from Ballyhalbert in a Seafire NN631.

He got into difficulties over County Tyrone and after 2 explosions the aircraft fell to earth in flames.

The location is recorded as "Three miles southeast of Carrickmore" and I have received a poor quality copy of a small cross at the crash site which appears to be in the middle of a field.

Does anyone know where this is? Is the cross still there??

Sub Lt Hornby is buried at Ballyhalbert and his grave is photographed on my site.

I think it would be great to have a picture of the cross at the crash site included if possible.

I live a couple of hundred metres from this site and the cross is not there any more. The little lady that tended it passed away and the field has been sowed again. I know the location exactly though
