So you're walking along and you hear an aircraft but it's not something you've heard before. So what have you seen in the skies of Northern Ireland that you didn't expect to see?
For me there are two - the first on was many many years ago when a Canberra flew over Lurgan about 8 or 9 times in the space of one afternoon.
The second occasion was just a few years ago when I was in Lisburn and saw an Antonov An-124 making it's way into Aldergrove. I think it was bringing in either an electric generator or a train.

I was at work one afternoon when 72Sqn were leaving the province when i looked up to see a 5 ship V formation doing a flypast over the former St Angelo barracks (circa '93 i think).
There was a Sea King HC4? flanked by two Wessex and two Pumas. They did two passes, both really low and they passed right overhead as my work is/was right next door.

AN-225 - flew over Belfast a good few years ago and the 6 lined contrail was unmistakable 8)
I'm sure theres others that I've forgotten about but I'll remember them another time. I'm too tired now!

Vortex you've just jogged my memory :) I was around 11 or 12 at the time and on my way to mass on a Sunday morning when I saw 3 helos in a vee, then another 3, then another 3. In total there were 15 helos in formation, made up of Wessex and Scouts - yep it was that long ago :) How did I forget that one ;D ;D

Ahhh this is a great thread to ask this... Has anybody ever tried taking photographs of high altitude aircraft over N.I? Obviously due to our lenses, they will not be great quality, but good enough to identify the aircraft and airline.
Over the past few days, I have identified BA 777's and 747's, Air France 777's and 747's, Fedex or UPS MD-11 and as of last night, a Singapore Airlines 747, which fascinated me. I have also seen a Lufthansa A340-300.
A large variety of aircraft and airlines flying over so have you guys got much?

To be honest I haven't pointed the camera straight up yet but I keep meaning to. Where I live there seems to be an airway over my house. I can sometimes count as many as a dozen trans-atlantic flights passing over head in the space of half and hour or so.

My SBS lets me know who is passing without using the camera ;) ;)

As very good but then you can't treasure the moment with a picture :P See anything that surprised you?

I once saw a C17 routing West :D - have a bit of footage on the camcorder somewhere. Most aircraft are at 30000'+ above me,the teleconverter is a must have for aircraft at that altitude.
Sometimes you'll get traffic from Dublin outbound to the West at lower levels but cloud cover usually means you can't see them >:(
I'd like to see the AN-225 Mriya go by 8)
