Title: RAW photography

Any of you guys experimented shooting any RAW pics as opposed to JPEGs?

I'm thinking of trying it shortly - i've downloaded some free software to edit the pics.

RAW is all I shoot. It gives you a lot more scope for error e.g. It's easier to fix an under-exposed RAW than it is a JPEG. RAW retains everything whereas JPEG discards what it thinks it doesn't need.

Admittedly I havn't tried as I have been too lazy to obtain the photoshop add on which allows you to edit RAW files. However I have been meaning to do it. The only thing is that RAW takes up 4 times the file size of a JPEG and I believe a tad longer to save the photo on the camera after shooting it. Having said that, I do want to try it out. How long have you been doing it Casper?

I have always used Jpeg myself-I had thought of using RAW but was put off by the large file sizes and the possiblity of shots taking more time to edit.

I usually go by the rule of if the pic is 80% good to start with then you should be able to achieve a decent result in JPEG.

Around 18 months now.

Yes the large file size can be off putting if space in a restriction but I find that I'm more ruthless with what I keep. It also means that I always have the original as I save a copy as a jpeg when all my editing is done.

Thanks for the replies.I took a few sample shots of airliners passing overhead yesterday and found the camera slow between pics - 10/11MB per photo aswell.
I'll try a few helos some day in better weather when the camera isn't struggling to focus as much (might help to speed things up a bit) ;)

Yes writing the files to card will be slower but you should have a buffer that will allow you shoot a certain number continuously before you have to stop. I think my camera allows me to shoot 9 RAW files continually before it grinds to a halt.

And I thought that was the IT mantra - if all else fails read the instructions :)
