It is inevitable that anybody who owns a camera, tries taking a photo of the moon to see just how close they can get. Post your moon shots!

Nice shot. Don't think my lens will have that much of a reach but I'll give it a go.
-
Shortage of clear sky at the moment-
milder temps but by heck lad!, It`s fair windy hey! ;)
-
Tried shooting the moon last night - would be too embarrassed to post the result :(
-
I don`t have a tripod but you never know what you can build with a few biscuit tins ;D
-
Are you admitting to being from the Blue Peter 'Double sided sticky tape' generation lol
-
Yea, you really need a crystal clear night for a moon shot but a tripod isn't neccessary. I bought a cheap tripod for £10 off ebay but it's so light and unsteady that I've never actually used it, not even for moon shots. >:( The window ledge does me, no need for biscuit tins :)
-
I took a few shots these evening, but it was so darn cold I couldn`t stop shaking-if any good ones I will post them up.
Just went out and took 30 or so shots (great thing about digital) at various exposure and shutter speeds.
Here are two for starters-Still can`t see no Lunar Rover ;D

Nice one! It is indeed abit chilly tonight but a nice clear sky :)
-
Do you use a tele-converter aswell Angry or are those taken with your 500mm lens?
I tried a couple last night too but even at full zoom (300mm) i can't manage that level of detail.
Great pics by the way lads - nice crater detail 8)
-
Nope-no teleconverter;just the 500mm lens.
I have used teleconverters in the past with 35mm but found the loss of quality is too high.
-
This one is well, not exactly cheating, but is using a little bit more equipment than just a Digital SLR.
It was taken at prime focus through a Meade LX200GPS Scope, and is actually built up from 9 different images.

Fantastic - you could almost count the individual craters. BTW Mark is was nice meeting you on Monday.
-
That`s mighty impressive-still don`t see no Lunar Rover ;)

....reallly? 3rd crater from left beside the US Flag :)

Fantastic photo. It's immense to see such crater detail! Congrats and thanks for sharing :)
Whilst talking about moon shots, has anyone ever tried long exposure star shots. I saw one shot where the camera was aimed at the north star and a 30 minute exposure was taken. The result was just amazing. I will see if I can find the picture

Used my new camcorder to capture the moon last night.

I have a couple of exposures taken with a f1.4 50mm lens of the milky way, taken from a VERY dark place down near Downpatrick - amazing detail - i'll post them over the week-end after I find them.

Nice one, I look forward to seeing those shots.
I looked everywhere for the photography thread where I had seen the star spiral photo but could'nt find it anywhere so this photo will have to do. I found it off flickr. Such a cool effect.
A one hour exposure! impressive. I'm not sure how far my camera can go, I think it's only 15 minute exposures! Imagine, one small nudge of the camera would ruin the photo.
-
These were taken at Castle Ward Co. Down, during 'Mars Watch' in 2005, and incredibly dark place.
The first one really shows how many stars there are out there, even though you can't normally see them due to ambient light.
The second is the Pleiades and Mars
The last one, taken of the milky way, you can just spot the Andromeda Galaxy at the bottom right of the picture.

Fantastic shots - what did you use to get them?
-
Nice one abyzz, those are some great shots! :) The only star related things I can identify is Orions belt, I'm not too good with the rest of them!
Several years ago on a family holiday in Donegal, there was a much hyped week where the Earth passed through a comets debris path. In Donegal we were lucky enough to get a clear night in the pitch darkness and we saw 200+ shooting stars in one night. I wish I had been in to photography back then! We were lucky to have a load of family relatives with us so there was about 20 of us standing in the cottages front garden staring at the sky during the night.
-
Would that have been in August by any chance?
There is a fairly regular metor shower that passes over most of Western Europe mid August.
I have seen it a few times, and in Italy around Rome they actually have a Festival to cellebrate it.
I think it is in relation to St.Lorenzo who had a monastary in the hills around Piglio two hours drive to the West of Rome.Beautiful place. :D
-
Fantastic shots - what did you use to get them?
Very simple - a f1.4 50mm prime lens on my Canon DSLR.
Varying exposures from 8 to 20 seconds ( tripod'ed of course )
-
2 from last night. but do i see a face.
-
That's the first time my son gary has seen a face on the moon. he was quite surprised.
-
I also think that's where the expression 'The man on the moon' comes from.
-
Here are 2 shot of the moon from last night
i have recieved a software program called PHOTOZOOM pro 2.0 so i have zoomed into one of the pictures so it looks very good.
picture is DSC01066(3)
also made this one bigger.

-
Looks good! The moon indeed was looking quite big last night.
-
Hi guys just took these picture's of the moon tonight i was using a different setting and would like to know what you think thanks.
1) is normal.
2) is cropped tight no photo enhancement.
3) is cropped with small enhacement.
4) is cropped with contrast setting.
[old post - attachment deleted by admin]
-
To be honest I prefer #2 - with no enhancements. Have you applied any sharpening to any of them?
-
No i don't sharpen any photo's
-
Seeing as its a really clear night tonight i tried a Moon shot.... Not the best but im quiet happy with it as it was hard to keep the camera steady with the freezing hands...

Smudge I was out last night also about 11.00pm. I tried and failed at star trails. However I noticed the Moon clear in the cold air and had a go. I saw two aircraft passing but likewise neither entered the frame.

Some nice stuff there folks-there isn`t much else to shoot at this time of year other than high flyer`s or the Moon.

I took a few moon pics last night,as the moon appears to be full;still some haze about, but the moon was very bright.
1st shot is hand held at ISO200 1/40sec F8 with no exposure compensation, and the moon appears very bright with little detail visable. This is pretty much as the naked eye would see it.
The other shots I used various exposure compensation to bring the detail out.

Now do I wait up for the meteor shower!!
Stargazers are in for a treat if they're willing to wake up really early Saturday morning.
The annual Geminid meteor shower peaks tonight, potentially serving up more than a hundred shooting stars per hour. The meteors will appear to emanate from the constellation Gemini (thus the name), but that's just an optical illusion. The meteors are actually remains of an asteroid whose fragments burn up in Earth's atmosphere as our planet passes through the field of debris.
Unfortunately, this year the prolific shower will have to compete with the bright rays of the waxing moon. A few of the bigger meteors will still be visible in the moonlight, but you'll catch many more if you look up after the moon sets — around 3:45 a.m. for much of the contiguous United States. (You can find out the exact moonset time for your area here.)
The Geminids travel slower than most meteors (a mere 78,000 mph), so their bright white trails linger longer in the sky. If you can avoid the city lights and winter clouds, you'll witness one of the best meteor showers of the year.
-
There was an interesting libration of the Moon over the past few days, combined with the angle of illumination this morning to highlight some of the crater rims that are usually less prominent in the direct Sunlight.
My Moon-knowledge isn't particularly strong so I spent an hour this afternoon with some charts to try to identify them.
(http://occurs.lineum.org.uk/public/2013/12/.moon_libration_2013-12-20_IMG3243c_s.jpg) (http://occurs.lineum.org.uk/public/2013/12/moon_libration_2013-12-20_IMG3243c.jpeg)
Now I have to check the other 'edge' of the Moon to see if the libration revealed any new things...

Beautiful.

Brilliant!

Shame about the conditions - but the Moon rises later tomorrow, so should be in a better position by the morning. We will try again!
-
Excellent shots Smudge. ;D

Caught a long-shot just before the Moon set this morning. ZK-OKS as ANZ2 on the eastbound leg of the round-the-World route.

Nice rendition.

Good Shot Merlin,I have been taking a few moon pics my self the past few days.
Also visable at the moment in a southerly direction is Jupiter with four of it`s major moons lined up from our viewpoint-I believe this is quite rare?

Oh! There are new photos here :)
Looks like that tripod is working-out well for you Merlin, good shot.
AT: that's a very pretty alignment of the Galilean moons, I'm impressed you could catch that with a standard lens. Usually at least of the moons is front of or behind the planet. The rarest alignment is when the four of them hide behind Jupiter! I've only know that to happen once in decades.
-
I was very surprised myself that they were visable-my intention was to attempt a pic of Jupiter, but I had seen on a recent TV programme that the moons were aligned in this way.
I took a few more the previous evening, but I have not looked at them yet-must check.
Thanks for your input. :)
-
He is another shot of Jupiter, with a bit more detail visable.

Cheers Smudge.
Actually I'd received a gimbal head for the tripod just that day and wanted to try it out.
So far so good :)
-
Cool! Which gimbal did you choose?
The Wimberly was a bit pricey for me so I went for the Lensmaster. Good piece of kit and made in the chap's garage!

Very long shot to catch D-ABVN as DLH491 around 05:45 this morning, just before the rising Sun washed-out the Day Moon.

Great shot, your patience certainly paid off.

Ta!
A Delta 747 had just clipped the bottom of the Moon a few minutes earlier so it was a bit of a mad rush for the tripod and kit to catch DLH...

Very nice :)

Excellent shot - great detail, Don. Your new lens is doing a great job.
It would be instructive if photographers would leave EXIF info in photos when publishing.

A couple of upcoming full Moon apparitions of interest:
16 October 2016: Super-Moon, perigee of 357,859 km at 23:37 UTC 19 hours after full-phase.
14 November 2016: Mega-Moon, perigee of 356,511 km at 11:24 UTC 2 hours before full-phase and closest approach of the 21st century. But daylight here :(

Brrr! It`s cold out there folks-too much cloud at the moment at BFS,maybe have a look later.

Beautifully clear from Ards but nothing much happening yet.
Due to finish by 02:54 so I might go for a kip for an hour now.
~~
Quick montage straight from the camera, too tired right now to do any processing!

Nice shots-I went out and had a look around 2315ish and the shadow was starting but still a bit vague-it wasn`t that spectacular,or perhaps my expectations were too high :)
-
Nice 'triangle' of Venus, Mars and very-thin crescent Moon out to the west now

Aww it's just a baby Moon, two days after New!
-
Very useful chart that-thanks for posting it up-I knew some of them but that chart makes it much easier to find things. :)

Two Earth satellites, Moon and ISS, as seen in the same bit of sky at 20:04 this evening. Nearly a hit, but not 'nearly' enough.
