Flight radar depends on ground based receivers to post information back to servers which produce the information we see
The media have us believe its a real radar display so when something goes wrong, ie a plane crash they jump to flight radar 24 and treat it as gospel
However when the information has a blip, for example a missed signal from the aircraft the program that displays the information on the website has a bit of a guess what is happening and if it gets it wrong then you get zig zags and other discrepancies
Thats it in a simple form. a real spotter will give you about 30 pages of explanation
