THE fate of an audacious $11 billion bid to wrest control of Australia's national airline now rests in the hands of one man — Treasurer Peter Costello.
The deal has been structured to circumvent foreign ownership restrictions, but Mr Costello said yesterday it would go to the Foreign Investment Review Board; he can also block the takeover, or stipulate conditions, on national interest grounds.
