11th Jan 1978.....The first flight of the unusual mixed power flight aircraft, the Gulfstream American Hustler executive aircraft.

The original Hustler 400 was even odder. in the tail it had a J402 turbojet, as used in the Harpoon ASM!  That didn't have enough thrust to keep the aircraft airborne if the PT6A in the nose failed but was intended as a booster.

They changed the booster to an F107 ( as in the ALCM ) but after the merger of American Jet into Gulfstream the engine became a big JT15D turbofan which qualified it as a twin-engined aircraft as the Hustler 500.

In 1980 Gulfstream removed the PT6A from the nose and grafted a two-seat cockpit to make the Peregrine 600 for the USAF's NGT trainer competition.

After that the whole Hustler / Peregrine idea faded out. I really should find out what happened.

OK, turns-out Gulfstream abandoned the dual-engine idea and put a bizjet front-end onto the Peregrine trainer rear-end, then changed the engine to a TFE731.  And then gave up in 1985.  Officially it is still 'suspended'.

This thread is great for digging-out historical nuggets but for some reason doesn't appear on the front page of the forum!

12th Jan 1979.....Pilatus aircraft acquires Britten-Norman.

BN had a crap decade in the 1970s, that was the second time they were sold.  The first had been to  Fairey in 1972.

The second sale was initiated by Lloyds Bank and one of the other investors forcing receivership in 1977.  One of few bids at that stage was from... Shorts.  But their bid was rejected and BN flapped around for another year until Pilatus stepped-in.

With all that churn they never did get to develop the triple-Dart, 30-tonne Mainlander :(

A bit late but here's one I just read in a book:

10 Jan 1947: Westland obtained their first license to build the designs of the Sikorsky division of the United Aircraft Corporation, and their sale outside North America.

Things became a bit more complicated in the mid-60s when Agusta obtained a license for the S-61.  It's hard to compete against someone called Count Corrado Agusta.

18th Jan 1973.....The results of the USAF A-X fly off are announced, the winner is the Fairchild YA-10 over Northrop`s contender the Northrop YA-9.

Thus establishing the tradition of 'the odd-numbered one always loses the fly-off...'

YA-9 vs YA-10
YF-16 vs YF-17
YAH-63 vs YAH-64
YUH-60 vs YUH-61
YF-22 vs YF-23

Wait!  You might say.  What about the X-32 vs the X-35?  Didn't the odd one win there?

Well the actual valid designations for those two should have been YF-25 and YF-26, so the rule stands :)

From Aviation Week in March 1963, when it was still the Aero Jet Commander:

Quote
Mid-wing design was chosen because it affords a minimum of centre-of-gravity travel and eliminated the necessity of extensive fillets to provide aerodynamic fairing.

It still needed the sharply upswept tail section of the prop Commanders and 20 years later the IAI Astra / G100 still had that feature despite changing to a low-mounted wing.
