Any of the Uniden Bearcat scanners would be a good start.

I have a Uniden Bearcat  UBC125XLT,it`s a very popular airband scanner packed with features, and you can listen to Civil or Mil freq.

If it`s only Civil stuff your interested in then one of the cheaper models would be perfectly fine, you can still hear the mil stuff coming into BFS etc as they will normally use the civil bands on approach and ground.

I confess I found it rather difficult to figure out how to use it at first, but plenty of good advise from folk here, and online.
