Title: How tight would you crop it?
Post by: kingsavo on November 24, 2009, 09:54:00 AM
Just had these two photos accepted yesterday;

http://www.airliners.net/photo/Flybe---British/De-Havilland-Canada/1613621/L/ (http://www.airliners.net/photo/Flybe---British/De-Havilland-Canada/1613621/L/)

http://www.airliners.net/photo/Ryanair/Boeing-737-8AS/1613622/L/ (http://www.airliners.net/photo/Ryanair/Boeing-737-8AS/1613622/L/)

Now was showing them of to a photography friend of mine (as you do!) and he turned round and said they are cropped too tight. Now i was always off the opinion "crop as tight as you dare".  In fact something tells me I read this on a.net itself! Surely this means that there is more airplane in the photo?! Now just looking at some of the other photos on the site it seems some people are using a looser crop than me. But I cant see how a tight crop ruins the photo and after all I've 4 accepted with crops all this tight! What are your opinions? Or shall I just slap my photography friend on the face next time i see him?  ;D He only photo's football by the way!  ::)

As AL.net and JP.net are 'catalogue' sites they want shots cropped as tight as possible with little or no space around the aircraft. So these shots are perfectly acceptable (obviously) for this purpose. But I think what your friend is getting at is that sometimes it's nice to see some of the surrounding environment. I wouldn't slap him though as what he photographs and what you photograph for are two totally different markets.

Congrats on the uploads  ;D

A.net are pretty strict on cropping and require pretty tight crops however thankfully jetphotos are more relaxed and alow a lot more space around aircraft when cropping. Personally I prefer to have space around the aircraft as it just gives it a better look in my opinion.

Leaving more space around the aircraft when cropping is one of the reasons I started uploading using larger picture sizes of 1200 and 1400 pixels wide.

Heres an example of some pleasent cropping, from one of jetphotos main screeners, Gerardo Dominguez.

Unrelated question! Does anyone know how many uploads you need to have had accepted before Airliners.net will let you upload more than 2 photos at a time?

Chances are that system will change as the older photographers on airliners.net don't seem to like the recent change from basing allowed uploads on acceptance ratio. Just something to keep any eye out for.
