Yikes String, You need to give that lens a quick wipe! :)
-
I have i hate the guy next door he burns anything and the soot is thick and it always attaches it's self to my lens arghhhh.
-
Nice start for 2010 for me contrailwise. Caught this Royal Jordanian A342 routing Amman-JFK.
[old post - attachment deleted by admin]
-
Caught this Aeroflot A332 flying over today. Was routing Havana-Moscow. Was just a tad far away for my liking, but still nice to see.
[old post - attachment deleted by admin]
-
Nice capture indeed.
-
Not sure but i think it is a swiss air plane.
[old post - attachment deleted by admin]

That would be a Virgin Atlantic A340-600 :) . Nice shot.
-
Thanks for that i wasn't sure. :drinks:
-
I was checking my lens when i got this one can you help id it

I'd hazard a guess that it's a World Airways DC10. Either that or a UPS.

Very busy in the sky today :) I must look like an idiot with the camera pointed to the sky :)
Think the first image is a Delta Airlines A330 and the second an Austrian Airlines 767
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Caught this KLM 747 Reg. PH-BFL
-
Just this one was visable today.
-
Had a bash at it yesterday morning Air Frog A340
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
BA 747, way past me before I could get my camera so this is a very tight crop, and a Turkish Airlines 777.
Third one is an Etihad A340

Nice one, you caught one of Etihad's four A340-500, pretty rare stuff! :D Turkish 773ER is also kind of rare :)

Those Etihad A345's are pretty common these days Dave. I've caught one, four times since mid Jan. One went over again today (A6-EHA), along with sister ships A6-EHE (A346) and a 77W which i didn't get the reg off.

In fact an Etihad A340 and Triple 7 passing over Lurgan at the minute - no camera with me :(

Caught a B767-330(ER) operator condor flugdiest flight No cfg-082
and A330-343 Lufthansa DLH-490
The INFO came from the virtualradar web site.

Austrian Airlines 767 OE-LAY at 32,000ft
-
Took a few today-had to shot into the Sun slightly which made things tricky.
Time was between 1430 and 1530 Saturday 13th Feb.
First one is an A330 with winglets thanks Dave-I have real problems telling B777, B767 and A330`s apart from long distances-I must look a bit closer at the characteristics of each.
-
This Swiss A340 flew right over head which made things a bit easier.
-
Nice shots, it seems I'm the only one not to have seen a Qatar A340 of any kind! The first Air Canada aircraft is an A330-300 (with wignlets) :)
-
3 from yesterday. I have forgotten what they were but i think 1 of them is an air-canada flight.
-
The first two look like Lufthansa, and the third is the Air Canada for sure.
-
Some from Sunday 28thFeb-no contrails this time!
First two pics are of Thomas Cook B767 (I think :-\ ).
Next too are Air France A330 (I hope ;) )
-
One from this morning - KLM 747
-
Skies are pretty clear at the momemnt so maybe a chance to get some contrail shots.I was out earlier and took a few and will post up a little later.
Not that much around at present.
-
Took the kids to the local park and just happened to have my camera with me. This looks like a C-17
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Took this while out with the dog.
-
It is indeed a C-17,I got it also but unfortunatly it was between me and the Sun so I had to be careful not to blind my self taking the photo.
-
It was a very busy day today. Even my dad commented on the fact that he watched 16 through binoculars today.
-
I noticed a lot. I only grabbed my camera for this one.
I believe it is a Delta A330.
Not the best shot very heavily cropped.
-
Loads of high flyers at times today-here are some I took at between 1200 and 1600 approx.
My attempt to identify them is in the file name-maybe Dave can correct me if I am wrong-I have trouble with B767 and B777`s at high altitude.
-
And there`s more:
-
Last few are of C-17 and two different BA B747`s.
-
Hi Angry was the last one taken as it was above Aldergrove? I was up this afternoon and have one very similar.
John

Etihad A340

Yes John, all taken at Aldergrove (well 1.5 miles away to be accurate) from my garden.
-
I think this is a private jet not sure what type it was heading north over my house maybe haeding to scotland.
-
I think this is a private jet not sure what type it was heading north over my house maybe haeding to scotland.
Could be a Gulfstream G500.
-
Looks like a Cessna Citation 560XL to me.
-
Did anyone happen to catch the two 3-engine planes at around 2:15 today?
Lurgan today was racetrack central. At one stage I could see 7 contrails, 2 harriers and a police helicopter - and no camera in sight :(
-
Your right Casper, skies were very busy today-I saw nine different contrails at one stage.
-
Noticed another C-17 tonight just as the sun was setting-just shows you whats up there and half time we don`t even notice ;)
-
Nice one. Would that have been around 6-ish?
-
Yes it was around 6pm,I think I will have a look out again for it tonight.
-
I took this just before it got really cloudy. It was passing by another contrail.
-
Took these recently just as light was begining to fade.
-
Nice ones. Like the fact that you can catch the tail artwork, something I've never been able to.
What are the chances that Emirates Airline would have flown over this morning? I saw something similiar to this this morning around 9:30am
http://www.airplane-pictures.net/image63849.html (http://www.airplane-pictures.net/image63849.html)
but if I remember correctly the red seemed to run nearly the full length of the fuselage and not just the middle of it. Are there any other airlines with a similiar livery?
-
Air India comes to mind, their 777's fly over every few hours.
Air India Contrail photo here (http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=6758018) ;)
Dave
-
Certainly looks like it. Couldn't make out the red nacelles but the red underbelly seems about right. Definitely going to have to start bringing my camera out and about with me :)
-
You saw Air India's B777 VT-ALQ
-
Thanks for the comfirmation. Really do regret not having my camera with me :(
-
Noticed this Ryanair flight to the north of Aldergrove Sat morning, from Eglington possibly?
Also AA B.767 again later in the day.
-
Took these tonight between 1730 and 1805
-
beautiful clear skies and not a contrail in sight :(
And then one comes along and makes a liar out of me :)
KLM 747 PH-BFN
-
Got this Thomson B.767 yesterday-not too much in the way of contrails visable yesterday due to mixed weather conditions.
-
Just caught this Lufthansa 747
-
Some great catches guys, impressive stuff. I never seem to be able to catch any!
-
Dave:if you are down at BHD in the morning until mid afternoon you can usually see plenty of high-flyers going over.
Gives you something to photograph whilst waiting for the Flybe/Ryan/BMI stuff.
-
Caught these 4 747s all within the space of 2 or 3 mins this morning. One's a BA but not sure what the rest are :(
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Lovely clear skys today.... 8)
Even i managed to get a pic or two before the F1 started..... ;D
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Caught these 4 747s all within the space of 2 or 3 mins this morning. One's a BA but not sure what the rest are :(
First 747 is a Lufthansa 747, identifiable by the grey belly,
The second 747 looks like Air New Zealand,
The third is BA obviously,
The final 747 is Singapore Airlines, presumably their Cargo 747F.
Nice shots guys, some blue sky here also :D
-
I was out from around 1200 until 1530 with a break for lunch and got these:
Again my ID attempt is in the file name-Dave will keep me right I hope ;)
-
Some more from today
-
Don`t know what airline this one is,has a blue tail but cant see any reg on wing,so it could be one of many operators.
-
Hi Angry, great shots, i think the ones you have labeled korea are Austrian Airlines, and the unknown may be another Continental, but i couldn't be sure about it ;)
-
I was out from around 1200 until 1530 with a break for lunch and got these:

Haha, ok here goes;
contiB767.jpg; This is a 757-200,
korea767.jpg; As EZY mentioned, it's an Austrian Airlines 767,
luftB747.jpg; Lufthansa A340-300
koreaB767.jpg; Austrian 777-200
unknownA330.jpg; Continental 767-400ER (only Delta and Continental have 767-400's, identifiable by the raked wingtips)
I hope that helps ;)
Dave
-
Thanks guys:
The Austrian ones threw me a bit because I thought of Austrian Airlines, but I thought I could see the swirl emblem on the tail that Korean Airlines use.( I was shooting into the Sun so detail was tricky).
Also I thought Austrian Airlines had stopped using the sky blue colour and most of their aircraft were white/thin red line with the sky blue underbelly.
The unknown A330 I thought might be a 767,but the winglets confused me again! :-[
-
Hi guys, Just looking at caspers shots from this morning and was wondering if the mini contrail coming from the tail of the Singapore Airlines was caused by the APU exhaust or is it related to the aerodynamics of the tail?
-
That is most likely from the APU.
-
Only decent contrail shot i got all day due to the strategically placed clouds :(
Taken about 12:30, KLM686 -- MEX/AMS, Boeing 747-406, Registration PH-BFW, hope tomorrow is just as sunny 8)
-
Very nice indeed. No doubt taken with the 100-400mm?
-
yep :)
-
Managed to get taking some contrail picks today-conditions were a bit tricky with some high wispy clouds, and a few aircraft weren`t making vapour at all.

Some more from today:
1st:Royal Jordanian A340 thanks Ezygoing for BIG clue ;)
2nd:A340 Airline?
3rd:A340 Airline? Took this just as Sun was going down.
A bit of a late reply however that's an Air Tahiti Nui A340-300
Whilst sunbathing at Mrytle Avenue last week, watching the constant stream of heavies flood in to LHR, I took a lazy snap of a contrail through some tree brances, I only got around to looking at it now, and it turns out its a NATO 707. I only had my small lens on so sorry for the poor quality.
Also with the smal lens, a AN-124, not quite at contrail altitude;

Air France -- 747-428FER (AFR6452 -- CDG/ORD)

Cracking shot that! I had intended taking some contrail shots over the past few days, but sky hasn`t been clear when I got home from work-doesn`t look great for the next few days either :(
-
Noticed this AN-124 today at around 1200pm before it disappeared into the cloud heading East.

Spotted this one while at Bishopscourt (races) today..

A few more..

Very nice catch with the Antonov. You just never know what's above :)
Steve what equipment do you use?
-
Which one is the Antonov...I can't tell?!
Casper, I currently use a Canon 7D and Canon 100-400 L for shots from motorcycle races etc.
Yesterday at Bishopscourt, was one of those clear blue sky days, and the amount of contrail air traffic was impressive, but I can't tell one from the other!
???
-
The Antonov (AN-124) is Angry's post just before yours. Nice equipment. At the minute I can only dream of owning something like that.
-
It has been a gradual upgrade process, from a Canon 400D, got a good deal on a 7D body, and the lens second hand, while selling my previous gear on E-bay to make up the difference!
-
Some gorgeous shots there guys. Pretty damn sharp photos, you pair must have a killer Canon 100-400mm lens? Do you use any extenders such as the 1.4x or 2x?
I was unhappy with my 100-400mm so I got rid of it and opted for a prime lens instead... still waiting to try it out though.
Again, fantastic shots.
-
Dave, I was using the 1.4x Canon Extender with a Canon 70-200mm L lens, but after a bit of wheeling and dealing, now use the Canon 100-400mm L IS lens for the motorcycle racing shots..comes in handy though for the contrail photos!

Some Contrail shots I took over the weekend-a lot of BA traffic.

Some stunning photos on your site. So you're an all rounder photographer? Do you still have the Canon 1.4x extender? It can be made to work with the 100-400mm if you tape two of the connectors, fooling the camera that the extender is not actually there, thus the auto focus will work.
Some more from the weekend-I use a SIGMA 150-500 HSM APO IS lens.
4:Air Canada B777 (not sure)
Looks like an Air Canada 767-300 I think.
Great catches!
-
Dave, thanks for your comments. :)
I sold the Extender, although I did try the 'taping the pins' trick, before I sold it. This made the aperture on my lens F8, which I didn't want. I find the Canon 100 - 400mm L strong enough for most of my uses...besides with the weight of the camera, battery grip and lens, I am developing a left arm like Popeye!
-
If the virtual radar site is correct this is an AER LINGUS flight to denver

Haha yea, the 100-400mm is a hefty lens! It gets a bit tiring when it's around your neck for hours on end. I have an old cheap Kenko 1.5x converter (non communicating), however I just bought a new higher quality 1.4x extender so I'm looking forward to trying that out whenever it arrives.
The 1.4x extender combined with the 1.5x extender and the 300mm prime, coupled with the Canon 40D 1.6x crop rate should give me a equivalent length of 1008mm! Although I'll likely need to manually focus it, depending on light conditions, but we'll see!

Great shots casper, the unknown 747 is an Atlas Air
-
Thanks EZY. Should have known that as I think I've snapped it before :)
-
Did anybody catch the AN-225 flying over today? My father claimed he saw it fly over Belfast earlier today around 2.00pm although maybe he is mistaken?
-
I saw something large around that time, but Sun position meant it was impossible to get a shot of it.
I thought it might have been the AN-124 again, but from my view point detail was almost impossible to see. :-\
-
C17? went over at about 3
-
Nope, saw that as well but the suspected Ant was going from West to East and was around 1.45pm when I saw it.
-
Some I took today:noticed many aircraft weren`t making contrails which made them hard to see.

Cool aerodynamic contrail in the first shot :D
-
Not sure on type but it looks great in the clear sky.

That would be an Aer Lingus A330, nice catch :)
-
Air canada -- B767-333 -- C-FMWV
No contrail :(

Very nice catch. Some nice close ups! Anybody booked to fly on this between LHR and CDG yet?
-
A few more from the weekend-need some help ID`ing the airline :-[ I just go and see what appears and don`t use radar sites.
1:B747-400 Looks like Thomson or TUI (don`t think they operate B747`s though)
2/3:A330 Qatar possibly.

Nice shots, the A330 is Etihad, as for the 747 maybe Corsairfly?
-
I wouldn't have had a baldy about the 747 however Corsair does seem to be the best guess. The later is a 777-300ER ;D
-
Thanks guy`s - B777`s and A330`s I find tricky to ID at altitude and my failing eyesight doesn`t help ;D
-
A few from this morning..

-
Not as good as yours Steve but here's a few from the last week or so.
Anyone know what's causing the fifth contrail in the last picture?
-
Most likely the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) which is usually located around the tail.
Great shot`s guys! :)
Loads of cloud and rain about today so not much chance of contrail shots.

I was thinking that or someone had flushed the chain :)
-
Mmmm lovely shots! Casper, any idea what the airline is in your second pic? Royal Jordanian, or perhaps even Air Afriqah?
-
Yep it was a Royal Jordanian
-
More..

Love the third one with the lingering contrails :)

A couple more taken at the same time..

Not to sure on this one i think it is an A330. might be an emerates flight

-
I think its an Air Berlin a330
-
Saw something unusual today (well for me anyway). Was watching a jet fly over this morning and it didn't have any contrails. Then it started to trail contrails. This continued for another 20 seconds or so and then the contrails ended. I can only assume it was changing altitude.
-
Saw the same thing this afternoon it was a 747 it had no trails then just above my head contrails appeared then dissappeared just as quick. Maybe the air temp was the reason. at that altitude.
-
Couple of efforts from this evening the Moon was almost in the right place, and had a little help from Radarvirtuel as well

Actually saw a light aircraft 'buzz' the moon this afternoon while I was at Aldergrove. Of course I was too busy watching it to think of taking a picture :-[

Some pics took this week-most were taken after 6pm so Sun position made things a bit tricky.

3:Singapore Cargo Mega Ark B747 (Just like the one that used to operate into Dublin.
4:Easyjet A319 and BA B767 in backround. Not as sharp as it should be as I had hayfever attack. :(
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Stunning set of pictures, I like the fact that you caught the Singapore 747 Strobing :) and the easyjet flying past the contrail is timed perfectly.
As for the unknowns i can only help with a few.
The Air Berlin is an Air India, the two unknown A340s are Etihad, and the 767 behind the Easy is another Delta I think.
-
Some more Contrails from Saturday-thanks for the info Ezy,was pleased to get the Singapore with the anti-collison light on.
1:American Airlines B777.
2:Air France A330-was contrailing intermittedly.
3:Austrian Airlines A330.

I think that the unknown an Aeroflot, and the questionable qatar may be an Etihad but i couldn't be sure ;)
-
I thought it might be an Aeroflot myself, but it looks like a B767-300,which confused me.
After further investigation I discovered Aeroflot operate the B767-300,so mystery solved.
-
Caught this American Airline B77-223ER flying over my house about 10mins ago.

4:Swiss A340.
Looks to be a Turkish A340, I don't think Swiss aircraft have a grey fuselage along the bottom. Some nice close ups :) Still mixing up the odd A330 and 777 though ;D
-
If you look closley at the A340 I think there are white crosses on the winglets which made me think it was Swiss.
Maybe you could give me a few pointers on ID`ing the A330 and 777? They look very similar at altitude. :)
-
Noticed this tonight at 20.00 XL Airways A330 I think.
XL Airways UK went bust last year but, apparently XL Airways France and XL Airways Germany were unaffected.
Seemed strange to see the XL brand in the skies again.
Also noticed this Boeing B747-400 at around 20.30

I just checked, Swiss have no grey paint on the botton of the fuselages, I presume the white paint on the wingtip is the Turkish logo.
As for identifying aircraft type at altitude, years of studying aircraft wing shapes, etc, as a kid to produce lego models :D
777's have the very swept back wings and and quite wide at the wing root, the A330's have less sept wings, and narrow at the wing root. Also the 777's have 3 fair track fairings pe wing where as the A330's have 4 per wing.

Fantastic, it's a shame the British XL Airways went bust, they had some nice aircraft.
-
Hasn`t been many contrails visable this month with all the overcast/rainey skies we have had.
Noticed a few when I`ve been at work but no camera to hand.
Just a few "high flyers" I noticed recently.
1:Air France B777.
