Post by: Dave on May 07, 2010, 10:17:11 PM
The weathers looking good for tomorrow all day. It looks like I'll be heading to BHD in the morning from 6.30am til maybe 10 or 11ish, should anyone want to meet up.

I ended up at the railway bridge beside RWY 04 on what was a beautiful sunny morning, albeit a bit cold due to the very windy conditions with wind chill. As someone mentioned before, the bridge is very exposed, unlike Ikea which offers more shelter.

I also bumped into Les from NIAG, very nice guy, I was glad of some company. I will try making it to the June NIAG meeting as they do sound like they're right up my street.

Anyhow, the pictures from the morning, all taken with a 300mm prime. My first time using then lens, unfortunately I forgot the 1.5x teleconverter which would've been handy for some touchdown shots. Next time!

Most of the overnighting aircraft departed between 6.30 and 8am,

Over all, it was an OKish morning, I can't believe how cold it was though despite the sun and cloudless sky. I think I prefer the fence infront of Ikea for spotting. More sheltered, much better lighting first thing in the morning, and of course the opportunity for breakfast when Ikea opens at 10am. It's also much quieter beside Ikea, only the cars of the arriving employees before 10am.

Very nice shots Dave, all so crisp and clear.  Did you notice a difference in sharpness between the 300mm prime and the 100-400mm?

Thanks guys!

Very nice shots Dave, all so crisp and clear.  Did you notice a difference in sharpness between the 300mm prime and the 100-400mm?

Yea the difference is like night and day. The 300mm prime is mega sharp, in the originals, it's interesting to see all the faces clearly at the windows of the landing aircraft, something you don't really get to see in the smaller finished edits.

However two years ago, I started off with a 70-300mm F4-5.6 and it seems sharper than the images my 100-400mm so I likely didn't get a good copy of the 100-400mm which was a shame.

Yea, I loved trying out the 300mm prime. Quality is top notch, but of course a compromise is made in that you can't zoom in or out so you only get one chance to nail a shot unfortunately. It will be a stunning lens during the winter months when heat haze doesn't become an issue during the day.

During the summer months, I'll probably only ever use the prime during the morning and evening hours.

I'll maybe see you this Thursday at the NIAG meeting?
