All SLR cameras, if used heavily, such as in aviation photography, will suffer from a failed shutter. For example, Canon claim the following shutter life expectancies for the following Camera's;

If you own a camera, and dare to think about how many photographs (actuations) you have taken during your cameras life, download the installer here;

This is a very simple and easy method to determine how many actuations your camera has gone through. Once installed, open the program, plug in your camera to the PC via the USB cable and simply turn on your camera. Will work will all CANON SLR's excluding the 1D.
My Canon 40D has gone through 41,000 actuations. :-\

Any idea how much shutter replacement costs for say mid range bodies?

I tried this out and the shutter reading was 18888 I'm hoping this is 18,888. Nice link and a useful tool.

My 40D has 6805 so seems like plenty life left in it. :)
Machine gun mode as S61 suggests should be used sparingly.

Doesn't seem to work for the 400D - gives details of the camera including serial number but no shutter count :(

yeah i read the FAQ on that and it has something that canon have done. more here:-
1.0) Will this show the SHUTTER COUNT on my 1D*/5D/10D/20D/30D/40D/50D/300D/350D/400D/450D/500D/1000D? The shutter count information is available *only* on Canon DIGIC III/IV DSLRs *except* the 1D* series. This means that EOSInfo will display the shutter counter for the 40D, the 50D, the 450D, 500D, and the 1000D. It will also show the shutter counter for the 5DMkII, but the camera must be power-cycled before the value is updated. The shutter counter will not be displayed (or will be displayed as "0") on the 1D*, 5D, 10D, 20D, 30D, 300D, 350D, and 400D. It's not that I have anything against the owners of those cameras, but simply that the Canon SDK does not support retrieving the shutter count for them. UPDATE (08/06/2009): Apparently, Canon has removed the facility for checking the shutter count on the 500D. More news when I learn something.

An exif viewer for Nikon.
Install program (2mb) and open your last taken photo, and down near the bottom will be "Total number of shutter releases for camera."
28,400 for my D40!

Casper, thats odd, it's supposed to work with the 400D.
Despite having had 41000 photos taken with my 40D, I'm still relatively happy. It was bought second hand from a professional photographer in the Belfast area whom mentioned he had taken about 10,000 photos, so that means I've taken about 31000 photos myself.
As with regards to the machine gun mode, I use single shot focus which rules out the possibility of machine gunning photos all at once! ;D I blame my high shutter count on all my spotting trips! Too many of them!

Thanks for the link Dave very interesting, its a shame it doesn't do the 400D I would have been intrested to know how many shutter releases I had racked up over three years.
Just over 6000 in 5 months for my 5DmkII :)
