Some ridiculously good pictures from everyone, some clear skies coming up this week, cameras at the ready. Would be interested to see if anyone can catch one of the new BA 777-300ER's that seems to overfly NI almost daily.

Decided to try out some contrail spotting with my telescope for the first time earlier. Focus was out by a small amount I think, but I'm quite pleased with the results.
1) Virgin Atlantic A340-600 G-VGAS
2 & 3) British Airways B747-400 G-BNLR
4) British Airways B747-400 G-BYGF
-
For a first attempt they're fantastic. Do you have an adopter to connect the camera to the telescope?
-
Wow, I agree, stunning! :o
-
Thanks guys. :D
Yea the camera is connected using a T ring and a T adapter (In my case a 2x Barlow lens).

Think I saw one yesterday but wasn't sure, is there any significant difference?
-
Given the endless parade of contrails over my house today I thought I'd have a go at grabbing some of them.
Sunlight was hitting them from my right which wasn't ideal but anyway. Pics 1 & 3 are different planes. A line of 3 of three flew over the house in quick succession.
I'll leave it to more knowledgeable people to identify them :)

Cargo B747 not sure of the operator.
-
Great shots guys. :) Angry, I think the 747 cargo may be Atlas Air.
-
Thanks for that-I have seen that 747 before, but it`s usually directly overhead so I can`t see it`s titles-I don`t use any of the virtual rader or flighttracker sites;I just stand about waiting to see what comes over.
Maybe I should use them as I do seem to get rather a lot of Lufthansa A340`s. ;)

More Lufthansa aircraft.

Caught this Air France A380 over Lurgan today. Unfortunately the sun just happened to be in the wrong place for photos :(
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Sun`s low position south of me was tricky for pictures today, but still saw some interesting stuff.
Didn`t see the A380 Casper, what time was it at?

I think it was around 2-2:30ish

I would say that's very unusual.
-
Great shots Angry.. The Pakistan International A330 is a good catch....
-
Have seen the PIA a few times now,but this was the first time I managed to get a decent photo of it.
I think it might operate from Manchester-I must try and find out.
After a quick search I found out PIA operate from the following UK airports Heathrow,Manchester,Glasgow,Birmingham and Leeds/Bradford.
-
Some more from weekend past.
Air France A340.

Air France Skyteam B777-300

Some great catches all around! Do you ever use plane finder on your mobile, which is pretty much real time?
By the way, the PIA is a 777-200LR, and the Sky Team livery is a 777-300ER, could either be Air France or KLM, we seem to get both airlines over us regularly.
Dave
-
Thanks Dave, you are right they are 777`s. :-[
I forgot to count the wing nacelles and also missed the short top of the tail fin.
I`m pretty sure the the Skyteam 777 is Air France-think it`s just visable near the front door.Nice scheme.
Don`t have a fancy mobile to use planefinders-I just stand about in the cold and wait and see what turns up-that`s dedication or madness for you. ;D
-
Yea, you're right, it is indeed an Air France 777, I can just see th Air France writing and little red logo along the fuselage now that you've pointed it out.
The plane finder ap is pretty handy, in the middle of the night when I can't sleep, I'd hear an aircraft fly over, always interesting to turn on the phone and see what it is. it even picks up the Air Atlantique ATP G-MANH that visits most nights around 3am. ;D Also a friend and mysef tested out just how 'realtime' the plane finder ap is... 15 second delay ;D
-
A couple more shots of the Skyteam B777
-
Dave is that the plane finder app by pinkfroot? I have it on the iPhone and you're right about it being near real-time.

Sorry this is a little off-topic but found these photos of contrails taken from space - think they were taken from the International Space Station. Thought I'd post the links anyway. [Don't suppose anyone knows what aircraft they're from :) ]

Brilliant catch. When was this taken.
About 20 mins ago. Just happened to look up and thought it was unusual looking, and managed to rattle off about 20 shots. Checked it on the radar, and details came up as stated. Was flying towards the IOM/England from our direction, 39,000ft.
-
Nice catch. 8) I think they fly into Prestwick quite often on refueling stops.
-
Great catch it is now close to italy on flight radar. DREAMLIFTER looks great too.
-
Observed this flying overhead, around 9:30am, whilst spotting @ BHD this morning.
Looks like a C-17 to me :)
-
Very nice shot. Was it flying East or west? Could it be a Canadian C-17 heading to the Mediterranean?
-
Very nice shot. Was it flying East or west? Could it be a Canadian C-17 heading to the Mediterranean?
Flying west.
Funnily enough I was thinking the same thing at the time ;)
-
Nice shot of the C-17 Merlin;see them fairly often over BFS,tend to be later in the evening though and with the sun sinking in the west it`s not always possible to get a good pic of them.
-
What mm of lens are you guys using to nab these shots. 4 pages of great shots :)
-
What mm of lens are you guys using to nab these shots. 4 pages of great shots :)
I use a Canon 100-400mm, and unless the aircraft is directly overhead, a hefty edit/crop with Photoshop (or similar) is required.
-
I also use a Canon 100-400mm, recently I have been trying to use a skywatcher 200p telescope with a 2x barlow lens = 2000mm ;D Not as easy to track/focus as a lens but good fun :D
-
Using a 75-300mm lens. Not alot of reach but it's all I have :(
-
I use my trusty Sigma 150-500mm lens;all shots are hand held, but I keep meaning to buy a tripod which would be a big help.
-
Took this yesterday i think it is a virgin airways flight but can't remember.
-
Caught these today. A kuwaiti 777 and Lufthansa 747
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Very Nice Casper;I didn`t see many contrials today over BFS,skies were clear but the few aircraft I heard weren`t contrailing and made them very tough to see.
Took these last weekend.

mmm lovely shots, that 500mm really gets you close :)
-
Great shots Angry. I've got to agree, 500mm on a crop frame gives very impressive results.
-
Thanks for the comments;can only get really close in if an aircraft goes directly overhead;most tend to be north or south of me,therfore they are much further out.
Here are some taken in evening when light isn`t so good, but some nice effects.

Nothing wrong with that lighting, best there is :)

A Martinair MD-11F-taken late in the evening so a bit grainy :-[
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Very nice. I caught a KLM MD-11 yesterday but the sun was too harsh and the photo wasn't great :(
-
Thanks Casper;I know exactly what you mean regarding the sun`s position.
Anything to the north of me or overhead is fine to photograph, but if aircraft are to the south of me,the sun makes photos very difficult and possibly dangerous with a zoom lens.
It doesn`t take much to damage your eyes,so anything to the south of me I tend to ignore now.
-
This is a good one i hope.

I think I saw that Casper,was to the south of me,but did look like a C-17,had a T-tail anyway,but couldn`t see it clearly enough for a photo.

Another MD-11. 8) Got this one this evening.Lufthansa example this time.

Nice catch, seems to be an Air Bridge Cargo 747F

Yes Dave you are correct, thank you :)
-I looked up B747 operators in wikipedia but Air Bridge Cargo wasn`t listed-I think they are part of the Volga group that operate the AN-124 and AN-225

I only ever seem to see Emirates aircraft flying overhead ::) The A380 was the first contrail photo I've taken where I've been able to read the registration under the wing... turns out it was A6-EDE, the aircraft which had the catering truck fall on the wing.

2nd A-380 today! + C-17.
Also appears to be another A-380 heading our way.
Nice shots! Thanks for the heads up... I was just reading this as I heard a noise going overhead. By the time I got the camera set up with a new memory card (havn't touched the camera since Dublin on Wednesday), it was just a spec on the horizon! Pitty as there's not a cloud in site here. Still nice to see the mighty A380 though.
Dave
-
Cheers Dave, managed to catch the third one between the heavy showers!
Three A-380s in one day over N.I.?!
-
Great shots Steve-did`nt see many contrails today here at BFS,some high fliers about, but most didn`t have contrails and were too far north of me to get a decent photo. :-\
-
Cheers Angry.
The C-17 was directly overhead me, here in Carryduff, making it more difficult to get decent shots. Have added the best three.
The contrail from the C-17 remained in the sky for about 25mins, whereas the A-380 contrails vanished in minutes. Why is this? Different heights? Different fuels?
-
Lufthansa A-380 this morning..another one currently heading our way.
-
Yep UAE A380 just flew over a few minutes ago
-
And yet another A-380...how many is that within 24hrs?
-
You wait for weeks and then five turn up at once ;)
Regarding your question re contrails and the C-17,all jet turbine aircraft use Jet A1 fuel,so I doubt that is the cause, more likely the altitude/temp and probably the shape/size of the engines determine how long the trail lasts.
-
Didn't you know that the C-17 is probably chemtrailing :) lol

Lovely shots, noticed there have been a lot less high flyers over BFS recently, maybe due to the strong winds, aircraft have been taking a more southerly route to avoid the strong headwinds.

Two from today.
Stunning quality there! A 100-400mm and a 5D seems like a killer combo! I caught the Air Berlin A330 aswell :)

Mmmmm Martinair Cargo MD-11F :D Nice!
Whilst in Dublin on Friday, this flew overhead, presumably descending as it's contrail disappeared. Maybe descending towards Shannon. It looks as if it's a military DC-9 (C-9).

Looks like the photo disappeared too Dave lol

Looks like the photo disappeared too Dave lol
Fixed now :D It's a rubbish picture anyway. I think it's a C-9 Nightingale, although can't be sure. I can't find aircraft logs for Shannon to check up on it.

Interesting to see one of those-would be good to venture down to Shannon sometime;I have`nt been there since I was 6;so a very long time ago and I didn`t have a camera then. :)

Very nice Paul. Underbelly markings seem to becoming more popular.

Cheers Casper.
It would be a lot handier if more airlines used underbelly markings. Identifying planes using Planefinder on the iPhone drains the battery bigtime.

Took these end of July.
BA Boeing B777,possibly a 300 series?

-
Some more:

I don't think that's a "300" series BAW B777, as it looks just a bit too stumpy and lacks the raked wing-tips of the 300ER! Amazing shots all the same!

Please tell me someone got a photo of the DHL 767 and Virgin A340 flying side by side. Absolutely gorgeous light - red contrails. Was around 6:45
-
Ha, what a coincidence, myself and my family were all standing in the kitchen waiting for the dinner to cook when topic of conversation turned to plane finder. I turned it on and noticed those two aircraft flying over Donegal and heading towards us. 5 minutes later they flew over however it was too cloudy to get any proper picture as they flew over :( i did nab a picture before they crossed Lough Neagh, about 50 miles away. Will edit and post later, currently lazing on the sofa :D
-
I was only 50 yards from home but had the wee man with me and wouldn't have made it to the house in time :(
-
The best I could come up with. First time I've shot a contrail at home for a good few months now.

Excellent Dave, fantastic catch.
-
Very Nice Dave;at round 5.45 I noticed two aircraft with contrails heading west and thought it would make a good photo, but was too late to get the camera ready.
I haven`t taken many high flyers recently either, largely due to the crappy weather.
-
Great shot Dave.
-
Thanks guys. I don't suppose anyone got a registration for either aircraft?
-
Hi Saw these last night also as I was enroute to Shaws Bridge to play bowls, sadly no camera. They broke out into clear sky and looked fantastic I noted the time as 6.50pm. That's a good capture Dave.
-
Dave, I believe the registrations are G-VOGE and G-DHLF. I put the time on plane finder to 18:45 and got the following.
-
Double thanks guys! I figured out G-VOGE earlier from flightaware.com whilst I wasn't too sure about G-DHLF so that was a big help. Cheers!

I was just browsing some pictures taken during a trip to Manchester last year and I came across this one. From memory, the rainbow contrail belongs to a KLM 747 whilst the other aircraft is a BA 777. First and only time I've ever caught a rainbow contrail from an aircraft.
