There was a thread about this on a.net about a week ago.

Several people condemned the pilot for even attempting that take-off as he put everyone on board at risk  ::)

Apparently there is footage of that take-off from inside the plane available on the web somewhere.

That is utter madness,if the engines had ingested all that crap off the runway,it would have been goodnight Vienna;I am surprised it was permitted to takeoff at all with the runway in that state.

Crazy Ruskies again?

The engines do ingest the stuff and spit it out the back!

What I meant was all that crap getting sucked into the engines, could have caused them to fail.

There is a bend on the intake that removes non air items from the airflow before it gets to the first stage. A bit like a trombone around the core. The air  and crap goes to the back turns and the crap keeps going out while clean air goes forwards.
