Things that annoy you at airshows
« on: April 07, 2012, 01:45:57 PM »
With the UK airshow season only a few weeks away,I thought it might be interesting and even amusing to find out what can really annoy you about airshows.

Apart from the obvious things like terrible weather and no-shows.

PA speakers on tall stands in front of the crowdline is a main one;why not put them behind the crowd?

Another that really annoys me is "rope bouncers",and people that allow their kids to run backwards and forwards past the safety rope or barrier.

As an example I have included a few photos from Enniskillen 2007,which was the worst marshalled  airshow I have ever attended.

Atmittedly two of these shots were taken at the end of the show, but aircraft were still departing and the runway was very much active.

There were no marshalls on the crowdline throughout the show, and this sort of thing was going on the wholetime the show was on.

yep , ropebouncers are a pain especially at smaller airshows where rope barriers are used.Maybe the little extra expence of metal joining barriers would be a better idea especially from the safety aspect.
At the bigger shows we always go for either the grandstand or an enclosure[worth the extra, although the grandstand can have its  pains aswell]
Worst gripe though is if we're using a grassy area with a nice view ...  of course the idiot with the big umbrella ALWAYS[sods law] plonks down infront of you ! Never yet come to blows over it  although few heated arguements.

I hate getting to the show early, getting a nice spot along the barrier/rope with a nice view down the runway, then some clown arrives with only a few minutes minutes to go and tries to squeeze in to that 6 inch space between me and the person next to me.

Also agree with all if the above.

This next thing doesn't annoy me but amuses me everytime I hear it - I love overhearing the general public, who know nothing about aircraft point to the Harvard and happily inform the person next to them that it's a Spitfire, or think a Hercules is a Lancaster because it has 4 engines :)

Oh yes: the Herc is a Lancaster one is a classic;I have heard that so many times. ;D

The PA and funfair at Newtownards used to really bug me;a few times when I went I borrowed a video camera, but the video`s were always ruined by the PA blasting out some Tina Turner crap or some dodgey rave music from the fairground rides.

Also airshow commentator Angelo Cunningham rarely knew when to shut up-he used to rabbit on about trivial details of the fast jet crews-I was never interested in what school they went to,or their wives names or what their favourite Dire Straits song was. ;)
