photo's gone away
« on: April 22, 2009, 03:42:45 PM »
A friend of mine was taking some photo's at a wedding and when he was ready to photoshop them they suddenly disappeared, the computer said no files found on cards, card not formatted. He tried everything he could to find them but to no avail they were lost 300+ pics all gone.
he still can't understand how it happened, no one can give him the answer. so he had to ask a friend who also took some pics to help him make up the wedding album.
Nikon said it may be the camera so he sent it to them but it was not causing the problem.
all i could hear was bleep bleep bloody bleeeeeeeep not funny. :'( :'( :'(

Every photographers nightmare. A little tip for the future - buy 2 or 4 gig cards and use them, take a 100 or so on a card and then change it. That way if something does go wrong with a card you've only lost what's on that card.

What type of Nikon was he using?

Pretty unfortunate although quite odd. First thing I do when I arrive home after a spotting trip is back up the photos before editting, just incase some of the photos go missing. Did he send the memory card to see if the photos could be retrieved?

Was reading a wee bit about this last night and two things that popped out at me were:

1 - Never shoot until the card is full as this can corrupt it, always change it when there's 2 or 3 shots left on it.
2 - Don't take the card from the camera to view the photos on a computer and then re-insert the card into the camera, this can cause corruption as well. Take the card from the camera and copy the images to the computer, put the card back in the camera and format it.

Personally I always do point 1, but never do point 2 and have never had problems.

just got info, he had just put a new one in and it was formated and ready to use he took the remainder of weding photo's and that wast all he did, he took the cards to snappy snaps and they discovered that the cards had no pic on them both cards were empty, they then tried to see if they were deleted but nothing was on them, it seems the cards had a fault but when he reformated them snappy snaps took some pics but the camera did not put them on to the card, so it seems the set-up on the camera was wrong. his own fault he should have checked that they were sent to the card not the camera's memory.
problem solved.

Don't know about the Nikon but my camera has a setting that will not allow a picture to be taken if there is no card present.

this is what nikon say.
Memory card :-
Nikon defaults this to the wrong position so that D700s can be shot in camera stores without CF cards. Be sure to set this to LOCK so that you'll never be shooting blanks!

If you don't set this away from the default of OK, you could shoot for a week and, if you don't try to play back other shots, might not notice you have no card!
