Tall Ships Belfast

*Belfast has been chosen as the destination for the final leg of the 2009 Atlantic Challenge Tall Ships Race. .
 Having sailed across the Atlantic Ocean from Canada, the ships will be berthed in Belfast Quays between Thursday 13th and Sunday 16th August 2009. * *Copied from site**


I also found out that a small air display will take place. The Yackovlevs will display the 14th and 15th.

Might be worth heading down to see the ships, along with the yaks.

I have another of the tall ships on AIS at the moment, the 'Sagres' is just off West Torr having cleared the Rathlin VTS and is making her way to Belfast.

The 'Capitan Miranda' is now showing as berthed in Belfast, she passed along the north coast late yesterday afternoon passing through the VTS around 1830.

The NVE Cisne Branco is also showing as being berthed in Belfast, she must have slipped past when I wasn't looking  ;)

Took a drive to Ballycastle yesterday to have a look at the class A vessel the 'Europa', a spectacular view in the bay with Fairhead as a backdrop.  There were another three berthed in the harbour, two class B vessels, the 'Jolie Brise' and 'Etoile' and one class D the 'Xsaar'.

It also gave me the opportunity to get a look at the new high speed catamaran the 'Rathlin Express' which went into service on July 18th.

I headed down yesterday but was put off by the huge amount of people. I had completely forgotten about the Yak's display, does anyone know where they were based for the event? BHD seems to have made sense, I'm gutted I was away and didnt get to catch them there. I only had my small lens with me yesterdat so no pics.

I was dragged off to the cinema to see Harry Potter before the sips had left. Having never seen or read a Harry Potter film or book, I didn't have a clue what was going on  >:( I kind of wished I had waited to see the tall ships leaving as the sun did come out just before I headed off, and I did see one with her sails set up and looked pretty impressive :( Maybe next time!

Pic on the BBC website of what looks like a Sukhoi Su26 or Extra 540 making an inverted pass under one of the H+W cranes :o

I wonder how they got  permission for that?

I haven`t found any info re other aerobatic displays at the Tall Ships event other than the Yakovlev`s and they only brought 2 aircraft.

The other display was by Steve Jones (ex Red Bull Air Racer) and team mate of Paul Bonhomme in "The Red Bull Matadors"

He flew Sukhoi 26 M2 G-IIIS ;D
