A320 ZS-GAS
d EINN Shannon 09:45 GBB1219 to HECA Cairo
1989-built A320-231 c/n 76 formerly 6V-AJA, ZA-GAS, N629AW, N910GP, N909BN ntu
Originally ordered by Pan Am in a batch of 16 ( + 34 options ) in 1985, that order was cancelled in 1988 and taken-up by Braniff II as 50 firm orders of which were 26 to be funded by and leased from Guinness-Peat ( GPA ). In turn Braniff II folded and Airbus insisted on GPA taking their aircraft, which were subsequently parked in the Arizona desert.
At that time the IAE V2500-engined A320 was an oddity, with Indian Airlines being the only active operator. Eventually America West negotiated leases for all 26 as part of a $200 million investment in the airline by Airbus, GPA, IAE and Kawasaki.
