Sitting in the cockpit
« on: November 26, 2005, 08:38:20 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has ever sat in the cockpit of a modern (or not so modern for that matter) warplane?

Was it at an open day, family day, airshow etc?

Well i've sat in the Cockpit of Lightning XS452 when it was at Cranfield, before it went to SA. Got to say it is very cramped. Not too sure if you would class it as a warplane (maybe for a poor nation) but i've flown a YAK-52. Very injoyable it was too.  8)  8)  8)

You've flown it? You have a pilots license?

I sat in the cockpit of an F-104 Starfighter. Unfortunately that's all there was of it. It was in pieces waiting on restoration.

I've sat in T-38, F-4 and SR-71 training aids (basically the cockpit section on a platform) and actual F-16 and A-10 cockpits at airshows.  Lots of transport cockpits too.

May they rest in peace, those graceful masters of the sky...

Happiness is Tomcat-Shaped.

I love the smell of jet fuel in the morning.

Unfortunatly i dont have a pilots licence, i got about half way through and lost my job which ended the flying lessons rather abruptly. however for my 21st i did get an hour in a Yak-52 from Little Gransden which was awesome as Mr Jefferies himself took me up and the full capabilities of the beast were shown off.Had about 10 mins myself doing some gentle turns, was very enjoyable though. I've also had the pleasure of flying with Denny Dobson a couple of times but thats another story. 8)  8)

Not exactly real, but a full size mockup of the Space Shuttle cockpit. The second photo is the Space Shuttle sitting on the launch pad.

You can see the orange external fuel tank. Unfortunately the Shuttle itself is covered by a protective shroud.
