RIAT 2011
« on: September 13, 2010, 12:19:27 AM »
Yes i know its a little early, but I'm just looking for some info from the people who went this year.

Planning on going over next year for the first time  :D
I'm liking all the reviews and this airshow sounds great.

Just a few questions....

What airport did yous fly into?
If you go on the Friday is there anywhere you can watch the arrivals?
Any cheap hotels nearby (IE- a travel lodge)

Was thinking of flying into bristol, getting a train to swindon and staying in swindon.
any better options than that?

Cheers,
Tony

I flew into Heathrow the day before the show (Friday) and drove up to Fairford. The route was well sign-posted and took about an 1hr to complete.
If you get an Enthusiasts ticket (or a Mach package) it covers you for entry to the airfield on the Friday. However there were plenty of people watching from outside, there's a main road running across the runway approach.

For hotels, I stayed at the Holiday Inn in Cheltenham which is about a 40 minute drive away, but that was only because I wanted to park in the Red Zone car park which is on the east side of Fairford, whereas Cheltenham is to the west.

As I recall there is a dedicated bus service from Swindon to the airfield on the show days (Sat/Sun), not sure about Friday or Monday.
