American Direction Finding Radar at Belleek, Co Fermanagh
« on: April 29, 2010, 03:44:27 PM »
Just learned that there may have been a U.S. Direction Finding Radar builtin the Belleek area to help U.S. flyers navigate the Donegal Corridor.

Anyone know anything of this or where it was?

Is there anything remaining??

I have relations that live a few miles outside Belleek but I havent seen them for years.

I remember one time we stayed with them for a week over the summer (1977 I think);my brother and I were playing football in a field whn suddenly two Wessex Helicopters appeared, one of which had smoke coming from the exhaust.

We ran to the edge of the field and both Heli`s landed, the troops and crew got out and they told us one of the Heli`s had broken down.
We played football with the soldiers for 20 mins or so,then two land rovers and a truck appeared. The troops left in the truck and the guys in the Land Rovers worked on the Heli for a few hours and eventually both took off.

My brother and I thought it was brilliant to see all this Army stuff and the Helicopters up close. ;D

I have learned some more about this location.
It was at Dernacross and there were 2 large Masts which had lights on top of them as well as a flashing beacon.

The purpose was to guide aircraft through the Donegal Corridor safely.
