Idle bathroom thoughts

1. Why is photography stuck in a mindset of rectangular photos?

2. Why are camera sensors not circular*?  The image generated from the lens is circular, and then we ignore big chunks of it and take a rectangular section from the middle.

* appreciating that a circular sensor consisting of cells would actually have a ragged perimeter

* smudge wanders off for tea, pondering

I suppose it comes down to print paper, framing, and even todays gadgets - all much easier (and cheaper) to cater for in rectangular format.

Imagine producing circular frames for all those pictures, portraits ........ :o :o

I'm guessing because our eyes are naturally a rectangle format/aspect ratio, which is why televisions have gone towards widescreens rather than the square shapes they used to be, it just suits our eyes better for viewing purposes.
