Weather permitting they will depart at 3pm today - that's what I was told by the pilot this morning

Yeah, but I think that the rule is "don't fly over the crowd". Obviously this is easy enough to ensure at an airfield as the runway becomes the flight line.

With seaside displays, they need to check the expected tide and have alternative markers available so that the flight line can be in closer to the crowd. The prob with a boat as a marker is that it will float out with the tide.

The Reds clearly were not using the boat for their flight line after the initial first few formations.

Perhaps it isn`t widely know, but the Red Arrows have special permission to adapt their display line at the team leaders discretion at non airfield based displays, and this may sometimes involve over flying the crowd to some extent.
I think it`s important to remember that Newcastle is a unique venue with a curved beach and a mountain at one end,so it`s always going to be a little tricky not to overfly the crowd at some point.

It must be very difficult for the faster aircraft to try and keep in a reasonable distance to enable the crowd a decent view, and still have time to avoid the mountain.
I think this is a problem for the Typhoon, either stay in close with no burner or head further out and use the burner;finding a happy medium can`t be easy-I suppose it`s like trying to demo a F1 car in a supermarket carpark.
Some display acts will follow the CAA guidelines very strictly, and some will use their own discretion to put on a safe, yet enjoyable display for the spectators.

Some fantastic pictures from everybody, we were extremely lucky with the weather yesterday, which held off thankfully until the Red Arrows had finished, the weather gods clearly on our side for once.

Nice that every aircraft displaying turned up, (barring one Hunter), and some nice formation flying all round. A few of the display lines a bit far out, but not sure what can be done to rectify it, as mentioned above, only the reds seem to get away with over flying the crowds, although the two Vampires did give us a scare from time to time with a low pass from over the mountains. Fantastic day all round, all that's needed is a few helicopters that can fly in a bit closer, and a closer display line. Other than that, great line up! Kudos to the Newcastle show organisers.

Yeah, I suspected the Red's must have special permission re flight lines. And don't get me wrong! I enjoy them getting close!

You are right about the Typhoon as well I suspect. The mountains do make it difficult to put the power on too close to the crowd.

I'll never forgot the sound and power of the Typhoon one year at Portrush when he did his high angle of attack slow flight and lit the afterburner right over the top of us standing in the marina area. It was deafening! But the pilot probably got a wrap on the back of the hands for that one!

My two favourite acts of the show.

Ach OK this old crate wasn't bad either.  Throw the wing over, mate.

I was glad of the thunder and lightening on the drive home, as I never even bothered to bring a coat in the first place!

Have to say that the Lancaster surprised me. Not really a big fan of old aircraft, but I thought the Lanc was superb. Great sound and the pilot threw it about at times. Thought it was quite agile to be honest! (given the type of aircraft it is and it's age).

Really enjoyed the Vulcan wing overs as well. Pretty steep considering the size of the bird and the tightness of the venue.

The first time the Vulcan threw the wing over, it looked like she was going the full way lol. A much harder display than last year when they kept it pretty by the book.

The Lancaster was amazing, could not believe how low and close it was.

The one thing we noticed, the pilots who had been here and displayed before were the ones who were bringing their aircraft closer than those that had not been here before. Maybe a confidence thing since they know the area better.

Really enjoyed the Tucano too, especially its stall turn.

The Tuc display was the best in years in my opinion.

Agree with the pilots familiarity thing. That's one thing about the Typhoon displays these days too. They used to come in to Aldergrove and stay a day or two and do a practice the day before displays. But now they just pop over from the mainland and I suspect that the display they do on the day is their first view of Newcastle at all!

Did anyone get the howl from the Vulcan as he put the boot down when flying it in towards the crowd before going into a steep climb and wing over (second wing over I think). That was the highlight of the Vulcan display for me! I was at the Donard hotel at the time.
