1971 Aldergrove movements

I didn't want to derail Paul's Aldergrove photo thread, so I'll put these here!

I found these summaries of 1971 Aldergrove services in the back of a slim booklet entitled 40 years of air transport in Northern Ireland by John Swann.

There is indeed the Viscount service to Leeds mentioned by ww2ni! 

On the charter side, I'd heard about the infamous Sterling services to North America on Caravelles but hadn't realised they had oeprated from Aldergrove as well.

Good find Smudge,and thanks for posting-I didn`t realise Caravelle`s had the range to do a transatlantic hop.

23MU would have been on the go back then too.

Edit:- I remember when I was very young, my grandad complaining that "back in the day" one could recognise who had made a car by the design of the grille/bumper/tail. He thought all the modern cars looked the same and they didn't interest him.

I feel the same about the civvy side of aviation today, more or less. A31x/32x and B73x are 99% of the traffic to our wee bit of the world. I'd as soon go and spot proper buses as opposed to Airbuses.

The military side is also pretty quiet, although in truth we probably have more fast visitors than we did for most of my actual spotting "career".

There's just so little to see/do/hear compared with "when I were a lad".

I believe that PRONI has all the aircraft movements logs from Aldergrove from 1963 until 1989. Has anyone ever had a look through any of them?

No, but if true I could spend a pleasant week or two perusing them.

Edit:- For most, if not all, of my time at school, a schoolnight ended with hearing Dan-Air B6FF land. 22.30-11.00ish, a Bae748, Mail run I think.

Why do libraries and archives have such awful search engines?

AA/1  Aldergrove Airport Aircraft Movement Log Books. 1963 - 1995
AA/2  Nutts Corner Aircraft Movement Log Books, 'Civil' 1962 - 1963

However only the Nutts Corner logs have individual break-outs on the website,  which indicates to me that the Aldergrove logs aren't physically  available yet.  But worth a visit to check.

Here's an example of one of the Nutts Corner log items:

aha!  That was the problem!  Apparently after two tech stops ( Keflavik and Gander  ) the passengers began to understand why the ticket ewas so cheap :)

Even 'worser', SAS used to send its Caravelles to Bangkok!

The PRONI website isn't the most user friendly, but at least it gives some indication of what material they have.
Typing 'aircraft movements' into the search engine brings up a fuller list with the dates for each book.
I see they've also some log books relating to the Ulster Gliding Club from 1932 -1939. 

They've also Shorts photo albums.
16 for the Skyvan alone!
