EIDW - 11.06.09
« on: June 11, 2009, 12:29:59 AM »
Just had a quick glance at the weather tomorrow (today) and it *seems* Dublin might have a bit of sun so I've made the normal last minute decision to nip down there for the day. Will be catching the 4am bus down to Dublin so I might be able to catch some sleep on it before I have to walk for an hour to get to the opposite side of the airport.

It seems the wind is looking good for runway 28 arrivals so thats a first for me.

On the aircraft movements list is;

2x Globespan 767's
2x Delta 767's (one of which is a 767-400)
1x Monarch A321
1x Air Transit A310
29839287x Ryanair 737's
Etihad A330

It'll be interesting to see what does show up and what doesn't. Will let you guys know how it goes. It's a shame I didn't decide upon this soon as I know Hammerhead has EIDW as his local.

How about maybe setting a date in early July and we could head down?

What a day! I am absolutely shattered. Never again will I go spotting again with little to no sleep.

It was fantastic meeting you Hammerhead and at such short notice aswell! It's nice to put a face to the username. I think I would have fallen a sleep if you had not shown up  ;D Your company was appreciated!

I as so tired, I forgot to set my camera up properly hence was shooting at ISO 400 for most of the day :-[ Still managed to get a few decent shots of the heavies I was after so I'll get around to editting them tomorrow.

Yea, that would be pretty cool, although I believe Hammerhead is heading off to England at the start of July?

And yea, lots of Ryanair 737's! I believe I saw a few of the same one's more than four times  :)

I'll do a wee write up tomorrow on how things went in Dublin, for now, bed time!

Thanks Don for the great time today!

Nice set of photos :) I don't think I caught any shots of the Cessan as any photos I did get had objects blocking the plane itself such as those poles along the runway. When you were with me there was quite a lot of heat haze when the sun was out  :(

Just a wee write up on the trip;

I caught the 4am Bus down to EIDW which cost 20 euros return. The bus was due to arrive at DUB at around 6.10 which would give me 50 minutes to walk to the spotting place on the far side of the airport before the first heavy arrival due in at 7am. Trying to walk out of the airport was quite dificult due to all the works going on in the new terminal. Thankfully once out of the airport, it was easy eough getting to the spotting humps. Luckily runway 28 was in use, otherwise I'd have to have walked an extra mile down to the far end of the runway!

Unfortunately the sun was backlighting shots at 7am, and continued doing so until 9.30!!! So the next time I go to Dublin, the 6am bus will do the trick nicely meaning arriving at the spotting locations at around 9.30am. 4am was just idiotic as spotting with no sleep is useless. I forgot to adjust the camera settings so ended up using ISO 400 for most of the day, rendering most of the photos useless for uploading, but decent enough for my personal collection   :)

I did bring a fold a way chair which was handy when things died down as standing for 8 hours is a bit tiring. Food and drink wasn't too much of a problem as two bottles of drink (1 cooled in fridge, the other frozen in freezer), a pack of baps and crisps lasted me my time there.

Now on to the photos. As mentioned, heat haze started to pick up quite early on, at became difficult to shoot through during the hours of midday.

Having missed her at BHD for the past 4 years, I finally caught her!

A new 737 for Ryanair.

That's all I've editted at the moment. It was at this point when Don arrived and we started chatting away :)

Now for the more technical stuff regarding photos, (Don, cover your eyes!  ;D ) I'm quite pleased with the shots actually, with a bit of careful noise reduction on photoshop, the effects of ISO 400 were easily enough erased. At the time I was wondering why I was getting shutter speeds of 1/1600 when the aircraft was in clouds!  ;D I started thinking the 40D is some kind of super camera!

I stick up some more shots when they've been editted. I had a good sleep last night so I'm all caught up with my missed sleep.

We should definately look into organising a DUB meeting or something. There was a little breakfast caravan l("crepes creap")ocated at the first spotting hump, something I didn't notice until leaving so that might be handy for food if any of us do fancy heading down in the future. It would be good to have Don there if some kind of meeting was arranged.

Very nice series of shots. Especially like the brake smoke in some of them. We'll definitely have to arrange a trip over the Summer.

Nowadays this setting shouldn't be of major concern as modern cameras don't produce that much noise up to this speed. Having said that I use Lightroom to remove noise as I find it alot better at it than Photoshop.

Thanks dave.... :-[....I had one of the poles in that pic too until i cropped it out.... ;D

Very nice series of shots. Especially like the brake smoke in some of them. We'll definitely have to arrange a trip over the Summer.

The wind was blowing the touchdown smoke from each landing directly towards me so by the end of my spotting, my head was spinning from the smell  :D

The only issue with grain is sharpening. If the original shot has grain then it's made worse by sharpening. I had to adjust my sharpening for those ISO 400 shots.

I dont have a camera just yet,but would be well up for a spotting trip.

There were actually two US 757's in, which I can't remember if they were both scheduled or not. I caught one arriving but the photos too dar to do anything with, I also caught the second one in better conditions but havn't editted it. Will post it up when I get them done :)

We will organise some spotting trips down there. DUB is a fantastic place for spotting, it's even better when runway 10's in use.

Thanks dave.... :-[....I had one of the poles in that pic too until i cropped it out.... ;D

The pole was covering the aircraft for me half the time :D Theres one pole that destroys shots as they line up on runway 10, and then theres a massive one which blocks the arrivals half the time.

You mean i arrived and distracted you..... ;) ;D

Ha! I'm glad you showed up as I would've gone insane there by myself!  ;D

As promised, the rest of the shots from the daytrip;

I did managed to get one shot of that Cessna that Don caught!

Performed an missed approach for an unknown reason which confused me and Don.

Hopefully jetphotos.net screeners won't notice the heat haze on the wings :)

This was in Belfast last year for Shorts Bombardier Centenary celebrations

One for Chalkman :)

Again hopefully the heat haze on the fuselage cheatlines isn't too much for the jetphotos.net team. My favourite photo of the day  ;D

I'm already looking forward to my next trip to Dublin! I'm thinking for staying down there for a while in the evening when I arrive back from Finland on the 23rd of June if the weathers good, but I'll give an earlier heads up!

Again very nice series. Just wondering if you managed to catch that colour plane in the background of the first photo?

You wont catch that aircraft anywhere except on the ground casper....The plane in question is EI-CJD, formerly owned by Ryanair. Its now used by the airport fire and rescue dept for training purposes.      Nice pic's again Dave... I must get over early some morning and see if i can get some pics of the heavies and i remember that Cessna went up like a r/c model one... :o
