Something new ( old ) for trans-Atlantic spotting
« on: January 24, 2016, 08:02:24 PM »
Well I was only a toddler when the Shah was toppled so I never saw Iran Air on the Atlantic runs to North America, but the Interweb cables are singing with the news that Iran will soon sign a deal for 120 Airbus aircraft.

Eight A380s, a rake of A350s and A320s and first of all a pile of second-hand A340s to bootstrap the resurgence.

Hmm just thinking though, with Russian airspace being navigable these days I may not see Iran Air anyhow if they take the over-the-top routings...

Blimey, apparently not only 100+ new airframes to be delivered within four years but also contracts to rebuild multiple airports!

Just Twittery rumours at this point on the second day of the President's visit to Paris.

Hell of a coup for the french and a real kick in the teeth for the Russians.
They'd offered Tehran licensed assembly on the "Tupelov Super Jet" or whatever it's called if they opted for it.

It seems not everything in the garden is rosy:

Or maybe it is...

 :-\

Edit:- They've been sniffing round Boeing too, which might have a bearing, although if I understood it properly it was an "as well as" purchase not an "instead of.

Here is the BBC verson of the story.........http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-35434483

The sanctions thing seems to be going around in circles,I have seen stories were they are to lifted, and also some reports that they aren`t-it`s a bit confusing. :-\

It's an illustration of money talking, writ large.
Iran broke the agreement over sanction lifting in the eyes of the UNSC by testing a nominally nuclear capable SSM, the Iranians say it wasn't a breach.
Iran started waving a very large chequebook and the people who stand to get the money are willing to look the other way over the missile test.
At least that's what I think happened!

I would expect the whole debacle to continue in will they/won't they fashion until after the US elections, at least in the West.

All Nippon have piled-on as well with an order for three A380s.

Rather lost in the signal of yesterday's order, however.

That`s what I took from it as well- a touch of old hokey cokey type thing.

Came across this piece when googling for info on a post in a military forum which suggested the Iranians were to begin licence production of T90 MBTs.   If even partially true it's going to upset an awful lot of people, not just because the balance of power in the Gulf region will be significantly shifted, but because Moscow is going to get an equally significant injection of cash.

Issues related to future procurement of Russian weapons will be on the agenda of the Iranian defense minister Hossein Dehghan visiting Russia at the moment.

'Agreement' reached between Boeing and Iran Air for 50 737MAX-8, 15 777-300ER and 15 777-9.

Airbus order to be finalised soon as well.

Not going to help very much with keeping the 380 in production. Did anything more ever come of cargo conversions?

And it appears they've also cancelled the never-delivered-to-Transaero 747-8s that were being reconditioned by Boeing, plus  all the interim-fill A330s.  Not sure yet if the A330NEOs are affected, though.

So the future fleet looks like B738MAX, A32_ & NEO, ( possibly A33_ NEO ), A35K, B77W, B779.

The first A321 is already painted and ready for delivery.
