Green Lasers!
« on: July 25, 2009, 11:47:20 AM »
With thanks to fellow monitor Steve D. I thought some of you might find the following of interest.

Just heard the crew of EZY34XG Boeing 737 G-EZJZ reporting to Belfast Approach that they had been targeted with a green laser as they were crossing over Belfast Lough from S to N.

The light came from the north-shore and they gave co-ordinates for the culprit and as the a/c crossed this position Aldergrove were able to get a lock for raising a report for the appropriate authorities.  This happened to the same crew just a couple of nights ago as they crossed East Belfast.

Second a/c B737 G-CELV EXS378 has just reported the same thing.  States that the light is coming from a hillside.
Accidents usually follow the simultaneous combination of running out of airspeed, altitude, and ideas

Mindless idiots. They won't be content until they cause a disaster and then they'll sit back with their cans of beer wondering how it happened. Minimum 2 year sentence.

I have heard that sea fisherman are using these green lasers to attract fish they use clear line and put the laser on the rod tip then shine it through the line and it make the bait glow more then the chemical lights that they used. strange but i saw them in a tackle shop for £5 incl batteries.

These must be some quite large green lasers to be able to distract pilots from that altitude. It is likely to be some 12 year old kid having 'fun'  >:(

I think the problem is that once the laser light hits the cockpit window(s) it disperses filling the cockpit with light and blinding the pilot(s).

Those things should have been banned years ago ::)-no ligitamate use for them that I can think of.
Problem seems to escalate when it reaches the news so I believe the media have been asked not to report it for fear of copycats.

The CAA issued a press release asking for these things not to be reported until the case has been to court-I don`t think thay should be reported in the media at all-just puts ideas in thick heads >:(
