'Police61'
« on: August 15, 2009, 07:29:05 PM »
I've just caught a distant glimpse of a Squirrel helicopter in black and yellow police colours using the callsign 'Police61'
Could this be the new heli - and not an EC145 which was previously mentioned?

Wondering that myself. It hovered over Lurgan for around 20 minutes last Thursday or Friday. Managed to get a photo of it, be it a very distant one, but haven't had a chance to look at it yet.

I would have thought it would have been better having two helicopters of the same type rather than two different ones, especially for maintence/repairs and crews?

Seen this about recently myself: I think it is probably on loan from the Army Joint Helicopter Flying School which has a base at RAF Valley.

The Squirrel has been replaced by more modern types such as the EC-135/145 and MD500 Explorer by most other UK Police forces,so I reckon this is just a stop gap measure until the new heli is ready.

G-SEWP was over helping with traffic control for the Parade of Sail during the Tall Ships in August. These were taken up at Knockagh Monument.

Police helicopter was recalled yesterday as the body of a man who jumped into the river was recovered at around 11am. He was from coleraine.
