The weather is actually very good in England today :- https://en.sat24.com/en/gb

Pretty much clear skies.

I have no time for Portrush (or Newcastle) anymore. Glad I didn't go.

I'm over here on holiday and decided to stop by for the display. I'd forgot how bad the displays are here. It's clouding over and the wind is picking up. Time to head home!

After much consideration I decided to go up today, there were a few items of interest, and the forecast wasn`t too bad either for us,or Scotland/Northern England.
I arrived around 12.30,later than I usually would, town was crammed, but Ramore car park only half full at best. The area in front of the Tennis Courts has been demolished, and I noticed part of Ramore head seemed to be open.
Mrs AT texted me about the cancellation`s,so I set up camp briefly to get my breath back,I spoke to a few people and they confirmed what was happening,I left for home again after 20mins,and it seemed as if a lot of others where doing the same.I was not prepared to waste more time, and then hear more aircraft had to scrub their displays.
I also noticed that this year programme featured a photo of a RAF Harrier with the RAF 100 Red sticker on it--misleading I would say,as they were retired in 2011.

This will definitely be my last Portrush Airshow, unless sunshine is 100% and they get something worth seeing. The idea of teaming up with the Scottish Airshow at Ayr should have been a good one,but it has backfired again, because we are only getting some aircraft, and we are sharing their cancellations.
There is no Plan B from the organisers, aircraft are not arriving here on the Thurs,or Fri as they used to do-nearly all are operating from Scotland.

It seems really unfair to those who want to support their local show, and pay out for B+B`s,Hotels, rental of campers etc and travel up just to be bitterly disappointed year after year.

Unfortunately the weather is the luck of the draw, was at Radom in Poland last weekend for one of the biggest shows in Europe this year completely wrecked on the Sunday with low cloud and rain and Saturday was only marginally better.

So even if you do head for the big shows nothing is guaranteed.

Dakota low passes were fantastic.. That's really all I can say.

Multiple 30+ minute breaks killed the day, people were fed up.

Aldergrove with an entrance fee is the only really viable airshow option for Northern Ireland. Really, it is.

People need to pay up to see something good and I don’t are about this “it’s an operational airport so they can’t” argument. The RAF did great open days and the show could be held over that side of the airfield. The regular airliner departures would just add to the interest and keep things always flying.

Other busy city airspace’s and airports manage to do it. We need an airshow hosted at a runway where the aircraft can come and land. Either on the day or in the days before.

No teaming up with other events. That’s a money saving option that goes drastically wrong because the pilots simply cancel if they don’t get both their fees.

Conditions across the water today have been fine. They basically have the weather we had yesterday. The Irish Sea has some cloud cover, but come on, we’re not flying bi-planes here! It’s largely VFR throughout the UK and Ireland today with even VFR gaps in the Irish see that could have been routed through.

The no shows and pure and simple business decisions. Our airshows get stood up because of money. And not just today either. Pure and simple.

Need to get show back to an airfield so if suff goes tech or no shows then it's quick to get a fill in.
When I was helping out in ards it was normal to shift displays round.
You will always get more aircraft if you offer free fuel and food. We even replaced spark plugs for free one year on a zlin as pilot would of had to cancelled display. Can't do that if just a D&FO

I think both NI seaside shows reached an aviation high and were found wanting by the money.
Portrush sold as much burgers, chips, candy floss & plastic dog poop today as it did in the years when F-16s and multiple Lancasters were gracing the bay and that's really all there is to it, Why spend on exotic aviation items when the autogyro will run up and down the strand for the price of the fuel and a steak dinner?.  Wanna see 'planes?  Go to an airshow, NI doesn't currently have one.

Random question do the organisers have to pay for the RAF stuff or is this seen as advert/recurrent for the RAF? Why I'm asking if the red's can display both days in Scotland why not here.

There were 3 airshows they were booked at this weekend. Bournemouth also had them today. There had been complaints Bournemouth were not getting big RAF displays like the Typhoon and Reds due to Portrush and Scotland always getting them, so I think a decision was made by the RAF to spread them out a bit because it was the RAF 100 year. If they came to portrush today, possibly would not have been able to do Bournemouth. (At least thats how it was explained elsewhere when the schedules came out)

Pretty much. It feels like they are getting complacent. The crowds still come regardless. Sadly for the likes of us, its a family festival and not for enthusiasts..

Disappointed to hear the show failed to live up to expectations but can't really say I'm surprised given previous years.

Every since I started going to airshows across the water, it's demonstrated just how inferior the shows here actually are. It's gotten to the point where I didn't even think twice about not going to Portrush this year, or Newcastle and its only 30 mins down the road. Anything they had of interest I had already seen in July (in much better conditions and at much closer range).

Once the organisers started going for quantity over quality then they lost a lot of the enthusiasts. For Joe Public its a chance to see the Red Arrows or a Typhoon, but enthusiasts want to see aircraft that under normal circumstances we wouldn't get over here.

There'll be the normal calls to move the show to an earlier date but that's not going to happen. The local traders want the show in September as it gives a boost to their season rather than have it in June or July.

Also agree that the show needs to move to an airfield to allow aircraft to land before, during and/or after displays. Again, not going to happen.

Personally I think Portrush reached its peak when they got the Belgian F-16 over and has been on the decline ever since, with the exception of the two Lancasters display.

Newcastle is also struggling but they are constrained as much by geography as by the weather.

2015 was a great year for Portrush

Reds
Typhoon
Vulcan
Strikemaster
Viggen
Sally B
Hawk T2 x2
Sea King

Also would have had Lancaster if there was no engine fire.

Contrast that to 2016 onwards and its a sharp decline. It's scary to think how much the dynamic of airshows have changed in just a few years for seaside shows here. One year we had Vulcans and Viggens, then the next few years RV7s, Pitts & Extra 300s

Edit: I'm probably being too harsh. I'm a bit cranky after a 7 hour round trip (travel time) to sit and see empty sky most of the day (12:30pm-5pm) with massive breaks in between displays. Left the hose at 7:50am and didn't get back until 9pm. Really wasn't worth it aside from the Dakota pushing the boundaries to the limit! lol He seemed quite close on the final few passes.

Whole heartedly agree Merlin. It’s a shame really, but all your points mirror my thoughts. I also didn’t give either show 2 seconds of my thoughts this year. They’ve become too predictably boring. Not even worth looking at the line up as you could have predicted it the day after last year’s show.

I’m going to have to get myself over to the big shows in England. I’ve never done one before. Just haven’t got like minded friends to go with. Do you guys generally travel over by yourselves and do you find it enjoyable doing so? My family really wouldn’t be interested lol!
