21 November 1970: Operation Kingpin was a mission to rescue 61 American prisoners of war at the Sơn Tây Prison Camp, 23 miles (37 kilometers) west of Hanoi, North Vietnam. There were over 12,000 North Vietnamese soldiers stationed within five miles of the prison. The ultra-secret mission was carried out by 56 U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers and 98 airmen aboard 28 aircraft.


1986 – The first ever RAF air-to-air refuelling of a fully-loaded passenger carrying transport aircraft. It was carried out on a trooper flight to Oman as part of Exercise Saif Sareea. The refuelling took place over Sicily as part of the 4,200 mile, 9 h flight.

22nd Nov 1989.....The USAF Lockheed SR-71 program is officially ended,however 28th Sept 1994 US Congress voted to reactivate 3 of the aircraft for the USAF.
                           The first reactivated aircraft was delivered to the USAF 28th June 1995.The last flight of a SR-71 was 9th Oct 1999 AF Serial 61-7980 NASA 844.
                           It is on display at NASA Dryden Flight Research Centre at Edwards AFB.

22nd Nov 1993.....Qatar Airways is founded. 

22nd Nov 2003.....A DHL Airbus A300B4-200F OO-DLL was struck on the left wing shortly after taking off from Bagdad,the aircraft was severely damaged,causing a fire and complete loss of                                                               hydraulic flight control systems.
                           Despite the damage,the crew battled to control the aircraft and managed to get the aircraft down,where the aircraft veered off the runway before coming to a stop.

24th Nov 1987.....The first flight of the Grumman F-14D Tomcat,first deliveries of the type began in 1991.This version had new engines,and much uprated systems, a new radar and a glass cockpit.

BOAC's RT callsign SPEEDBIRD was complemented by BEA's BEELINE which was dropped after the 1975 merger which formed BA.  It is now used by Brussels Airlines


25th:
In November 1938 one of the RAF's Hendons went for an unauthorised nocturnal jaunt at the hands of a couple of erks.  It didn't end well for the aircraft, K5094, nor for the LACs who received a one-year detention each.

That was one of only two Hendons written-off!  However they were quickly replaced by Wellingtons from that time onwards and were all gone after barely two years of service.

One might wonder why it took them until 1983 to deliver a Malibu.

The 1979 prototype was an aerodynamic shell.  It was the first mass-market general aviation aircraft to be designed entirely using CAD and Piper were a bit cautious and wanted to verify it in flight.

The full-up pressurised production variant flew in August 1982.  Still looks good today.

3rd Dec 1945.....Lt.Com E.M "Winkle" Brown makes the first jet takeoff and landing on an aircraft carrier (HMS Ocean) in a DH.Sea Vampire.

3rd Dec 1972.....A Spantax Convair 990 crashed at Los Rodeos Airport Tenerife while taking off in almost zero visibility,killing all on board,7 crew and 148 passengers.

3rd Dec 1985.....The ATR-42 enters service with Air Littoral.

3rd Dec 1990.....Two Northwest Airlines aircraft collide on the ground in Detroit,FLT 1482 a DC9 ( N3313L ) and FLT 299 a B727-200 ( N287US ).
                         The DC9 made two wrong turns putting it on the runway the 727 was using to depart.
                         The DC-9 was destroyed by fire with 8 killed.The 727 managed to stop safely and only suffered wing damage.

5th Dec 1921.....Western Australia Airways opens the first regular scheduled airline service in the country.
                         The first flight was made with a Bristol Tourer G-AUDI,but it crashed with flights being suspended until 21st Feb 1922.

5th Dec 1945.....Flight 19 (5 Grumman TBM Avengers) departs Fort Lauderdale NAS and all disappear into the Bermuda Triangle.

5th Dec 1961.....A US Navy F4-H Phantom II sets a new world altitude record in sustained level flight of 98,560ft.
