RAF at 100 with Ewan and Colin McGregor - BBC IPlayer

Did any of you catch this show last night? It featured Ewan & Colin McGregor looking through the history of the RAF. There was great emphasis of  the first and second world wars. They got up in quite a few aircraft doing mock dog fights in WWI aircraft right up to the Eurofighter.

Ewan was given the callsign Obi-One (Star Wars reference ) and Colin Obi-Two lol.

it is on IPlayer now if you did not get to see it. Bit of coverage of the Cold War era and Falklands too but not as much as the world wars.

While I enjoyed the show for the most part I too was surprised at the lack of Cold War aircraft.

They seemed to think that the only Cold War aircraft the RAF had was the Vulcan. No mention of the Canberra, Victor, Valiant, Jaguar, Phantom, or Lightning. Brief mention of the Harrier.

No mention of the Tonka

I agree,coverage was very sparse of the post WWII period,the Tornado only got a mention from the brothers McGregor.

Easily missed,it was when Ewan was having his medical to check him out for a Typhoon flight.He said he was ill in the Tornado,poor wee snowflake.Hee Hee.

I fear that 100 years was just too much to fit into 90mins of TV, and it was at the sacrifice of the post WWII RAF

LOL yes, it was mentioned very very briefly.

The story on STD`s was something I never knew, maybe something I don't think I should have ever known.

Outside the Lancaster and Spitfires, the Cold War era is my favourite era for RAF and aviation in general. Sadly with so many grounded/scrapped/sold abroad in the year of RAF 100 it is horribly under-represented.

I am going to try to get into the Cosford museum before or after the Cosford show in June. I want to see the Vulcan up close again.

Apparently Bruntingthorpe is the place to go for Cold War jets.

The interviews were the best part of the program. And while watchable it contained the rather predictable overly long homage to the Spitfire.

They could have utilised the UK's aviation museums which were notably absent.
And aside from the cold war being solely the Vulcan, the interwar years seemingly didn't happen at all!

But an aviation program on prime time is no bad thing and hopefully may inspire interest in future generations.
