It's now official

Following the sad passing of Her Majesty The Queen, and in consultation with our partners, the Northern Ireland International Air Show on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September has been cancelled as a mark of respect

Council was out removing fencing and bins from 9am this morning.

Public informed 1045...

I'm getting a lot of angry people on AirshowsNI today shouting and asking why I didn't release the statement, even though I had specifically told them to wait for an official announcement from orginisers like everyone else.

Granted the official channel was pretty poor in terms of keeping people updated in a timely manner but as you pointed out several times, you were not the official airshow page.

You could not make it any clearer that you are not any part of the Official Airshow organisers.
To be honest, I don`t know why you bother, Joe Public can be such a hateful bunch. You are merely doing your best to keep people informed, and all they give you is abuse.

Perfect weather for the airshow today. Portrush was absolutely rammed. I'd say most folk who booked accommodation just decided to come along anyway. Shame all that planning has gone down the drain but completely understand circumstances.
Wonder will we see it back in 2023 or as originally planned 2024.

This has been posted by R5 in response to many asking if it will be rearranged this year. We all know it couldn't but they have explained why to the general public.

Quote
Not really an option to run the show later in the year. The council Events Team has a full diary and putting the air show together takes many months. Additionally, once you get towards the end of September flying display assets are not available and also the weather is less suitable for flying displays in autumn.

for this year's show we had to put in our request for the Red Arrows last September. It takes many months to put together the air show.

I am VERY surprised by this. The budget really did not reflect the line up.

https://www.causewaycoastandglens.gov.uk/uploads/general/220920_LD_Item_18_-_220729_Airshow_Project_Board_Draft_Minutes.pdf

Quote
5. Budget
Estimated Expenditure £517,312
Estimated Income- £198,800
Council Contribution - £318,512

On top of this the Red Arrows Display and Typhoon Display were 'sponsored' taking away some more cost from orginisers.

Portrush Atlantic Hotel will sponsor the Typhoon aircraft display.
The Hon The Irish Society will sponsor the Red Arrows aircraft display.

Aerosuperbatic Wingwalkers and Army Parachute Silver Stars Team where provisional/unconfirmed bookings also it seems but nothing was ever announced.

The many months of hard work would have been worth it, had the line up been reflective of the so called effort.

I really should have gone ahead and went to Duxford that weekend.

I'm off there in 2 weeks for their end of season show, and the flying day the next day. Lovely line up for the Flying Finale show.

Yes lol. It was me that posted that on Northern Ireland and Ireland Airshows. Was just giving myself time to write up an article.

The show will return as origionally scheduled in 2024 and there won't be a rescheduling of this years cancelled show. The plans for the show was to have it every 2 years and they will be sticking to that. They took a big hit money wise with the cancellation of the show last minute.

Source is the council themselves and documents on their website concerning the show.

I was hoping it was good news, but knowing how things work in NI, I was kidding myself!

Newcastle really need to get a show up and running again.  I always preferred Newcastle anyway  ;D

Expect movement on Newcastle soon. I'm still not 100% sure on the outcome, however the return of the show has multi-party support and a motion was passed on putting it back on the events schedule for 2023.

"Eats and Beats" which took place this year didn't work out very well. It poured down all Saturday, and even for the "headline" act on Sunday, Donard Park wasn't even full up for it. I'd estimate apx 5k at most. Undertones were great, but it came nowhere near the pull of the airshow.
