Air Force One at Dublin
« on: May 11, 2011, 01:57:19 PM »
Have heard some rumblings that the forth coming visit by US President Obama that US "Officals" are less than happy about the proximity of the road that runs parrallel to the main runway.

There are unconfirmed reports that Air Force One may use Shannon or Baldonnel instead.A friend of mine who works at Shannon told me that US "Officals" have been there in large numbers for weeks, and he has heard from a number of sources that they are not happy with the security of Dublin Airport. This could well be dileberate mis-information.
He also heard that a number of US Military aircraft would operate out of Shannon to escort AF One in.

Doubtless we shall find out in due course.

I think your friend is listening to too many stories Angry...

1
Why would Air force One need a escort over the Atlantic? Has some terrorist organisation suddenly bought a fleet of fighters? ;D
2
The road near Dublin airport is just like the roads near every major airport in the world and I never heard of the yanks having problems about flying into any of them before...
3
The runways at Baldonnel are too small to handle a 747, The biggest aircraft to safely land and take off from there is a 707 and a C-17 which has short field capability.
4
The last few visits from Air Force One were to Shannon because the President was usually attending a meeting nearby or visiting a long lost relative from the west of Ireland where as Obama is going straight to meetings in Dublin

I wouldn't be surprised if they did end up flying into Shannon. If they did fly into Dublin, they'd probably block off the side road along the runway.

When Airforce 1 was last at Aldergrove we got to take pictures from a comparable vantage point to the usual spot at Dublin. This was with PSNI permission and it made sense they knew where everyone was and could control where we were moving around. Indeed we were told where to go, in the nicest possible way I mean, by a police patrol. I can't make Dublin for the arrival but hope to be there the Saturday before; you never know what might show up as support aircraft. In Belfast we got at least two C17s beforehand.

LIke I said some of what he told me is pure speculation, but with the recent events such as the raid on Bin Laden`s compound security is bound to be much higher than normally would be for a Presidential visit-which is bonkers enough as it is.
I was surprised Baldonnel was mentioned as I thought the runways won`t be long enough, also the recent security breaches their won`t go unnoticed by US "Officals" as indeed would be the breaches in the past at Shannon.
Regarding an escort,it is standard practise for fighters to escort AF1 at least some point across the Atlantic, when Bush was here last, they picked up 4 F-15`s from Lakenheath NW of Donegal on the way in and a similar escort was waiting for them again when they departed. Its unlikely you would ever see the escorts, but they are there, mad as it may sound.
As Dave mentioned I think it is highly likely if they use Dublin, that the road will be closed off at some point, but as Canon John mentions if people turn up trying to get photos of the aircraft, the police are usually OK about it as long as you stay where they tell you,and there is a good few people there. If you were on your own,I`m sure you would be told to move on.
