I found this on another Website and i am going to the event as I'm involved with one of the stalls. However there seems to be no reference on the Ulster Aviation Website.

The event is to commemorate the bombing of Belfast during WWII. The UAS sent out notification to the local residents and all members were notified through the Ulster Air Mail (society newsletter).

However its not being widely advertised because they want to keep numbers to a manageable level.

I'll be there as I've volunteered to be one of the marshals but still hope to get photos.

Weather forecast looks good so far  :)

Unfortunately I'm not free on Saturday otherwise I would like to have gone. The last and only time I saw the aircraft collection was at Langford Lodge.

A bit sad that we're only learning about this now 2 days before it actually takes place. Is the aircraft collection EVER going to be properly open to the public with proper adequate advertising or are we always going to have to rely on word from UAS members?

I don`t think Dave was having a go at anybody, but it is a fact that the UAS haven`t been very co-operative with this website in the past.
I am a former member of the UAS,I was a member for over 10 years, and I still know several of the members,it would be nice to think that the UAS would seek new members from this site, but dispite several emails and letters from myself and Casper amongst others, all requests have been ignored.
It is unfortunate that the Maze site is in limbo, and I think most of us here are aware of the situation, however a bit of common courtesy from the UAS chairman to answer requests for a group visit and up to date membership info would not go amiss.

I am sorry you have been having problems contacting Ernie. I said to him many times that you had tried to reach him. I have no explanation for you.

The offer from me still stands.

If anyone needs anymore information regarding the open day then please PM me.

Guess what? I can now go :) No I'm not bailing out on my daughter on what is her day but I mentioned this open day to my wife and she suggested going to it after the meal tomorrow. Do I need telling twice? Hell no :)

So where exactly is the collection? Which junction should I come off at coming from Lurgan?

If you coming via the M1 from Lurgan then come off at the Moira junction, take the Old Moira road heading to Lisburn, once you get to the crossroads (the one with the traffic lights before the Burn House) of the Lissue Road and the Halftown road take the right onto the Halftown Road heading to Culcavy/Hillsborough.  The entrance to the Maze is about a quarter of a mile on the right, you cant miss the new fancy entrance.  There will be marshals on hand to guide you the rest of the way.

Gates open 1pm and stay open to around 5.30pm

There will be a full size replica of a V1 rocket on display + an original Morrison Shelter both newly acquired by the UAS.  WWII Vehicles and a Bofors Anti Aircraft Gun will also be on static display.

There is many new exhibits inside the hanger including the 99.99% finished Canberra XH131 and a fully equipped lecture and cinema room where different talks and films will be shown throughout the day.

Everyone from this site is more than welcome to attend.

This was an excellent day.

Plenty to keep everyone happy and the efforts of the U.A.S. to have such a day working so well is worthy of much praise.

WELL DONE TO ALL INVOLVED.

I am definately becoming a fan of the Ulster Aviation Society and the way they go about this hobby.

I sincerely hope that we can have this and their websites linked up as I am sure it would benefit both groups.

Great to see you Al! - Sorry I did not meet you XAir, Merlin and Casper.

For those of you who have not seen the collection I would definately recommend you arrange a visit.

Cracking Day !! :)

On behalf of the UAS I thank you  :)

Great to see you Al! - Sorry I did not meet you XAir, Merlin and Casper.

I think you might have met me without knowing it  ;D

I was on the team handling the car parking.

Agree it was a good day, I have the sun burn to prove it  :'(

Was glad to finally get to see the Canberra, very impressed with what the guys have done putting the aircraft back together. However for those who've seen it I ask you, would you volunteer to sit in the nose???

Was disappointed that so few heli's turned up, haven't heard why the others didn't appear. It was good to see the Irish Coastguard S-61 up close and the demo they put on was a nice touch. Casper and I got some photos of it but we were down sun so I don't have high hopes.

All in all a very successful day.

Was also there with the family this afternoon and have to say, had a great day. First time visiting the UAS and wholly enjoyed it. Am looking forward to next year. Aside from the fact I only brought my compact camera (and had forgotten I'd taken out the memory card to use in my dslr - doh! - (cue iPhone camera), I had a great day. My young son was particularly impressed with the helicopters coming in to land. Well done to everyone involved.

Have to agree, fantastic day and yes the Society aircraft collection was more than I expected it to be.  Congratulations to all involved.

Had a great day today thanks to the UAS for opening up their hangers and letting us see the work they do. All the marshalls and members that I spoke to were very friendly and enthusiastic and loved to talk about their work. Its quite daunting to get close up to these aircraft and to see the detail and engineering that went into them. One of my favourites was the Shorts 330. My employer back in the 80's used to send me over to England quite a bit and it was usually via the City Airport and a Shorts 330/360 no higher than 12,000 ft. Thanks to Tommy for showing me his handywork restoring the engine in the Wildcat. All in all a great day and well worth going to next year.

On behalf of the UAS I would like to thank everyone for the kind words and the great photographs (Casper), we had a brilliant day made all the better by the good weather and the super turnout from the public.

Final count was 460 cars and about 30 visitors on foot, going with 3-4 people per car we had over 1,800 people on site today.

We had some fantastic feedback and aim to make next years open day even better and I will make sure it's advertised on here well in advance.

Thanks again.

Alistair.

I thought this was a very well-organised event, with a great atmosphere and friendly welcome from everyone we met.  As well as the museum aircraft themselves, the display boards on Long Kesh and the other NI airfields are particularly well done, with great photos depicting the various events and activities over the years.
