Armed Forces Day, 25th June, Carrickfergus
« on: June 22, 2011, 10:03:05 AM »
As part of the Armed Forces Day celebration being held at Carrickfergus this weekend there is a Tornado Fly-past scheduled as well as an RAF Sea King.

Event Details

Weather permitting this might be worth a visit.

I'm wondering would the Tornado(s?) fly over the day before or just on the day for something like this?

Would the BHD NOTAM be for this??

Good catch. Didn't even know that was on this weekend. Haven't seen a single advert for it.

The Yakovlevs will probably be performing over the Odyssey Arena.

Hi Guys My contact fo rthe previous Tornado visits has advised that he is back with two jets this weekend. I believe a Friday arrival is expected with an overnight stay. Ian has promised to keep us posted with timings etc and I will be in touch with him. I will if I receive details and when permitted post these on here.

I didn't know anything about it until my dad mentioned it. Wasn't expecting to read that there will be an air display at it either.

Weather forecast for the weekend is Poo!  :(

Seems the weather weenies have got it wrong yet again. You have to wonder why they even bother  ::)

Anyway, planning to head over to Carrickfergus tomorrow and see the show.

Also given that today is also a 'good' day I'll be heading up to Aldergrove to catch the Tornado's arrival. With any luck they'll do a fly-by this time  ;D

I think I will have to settle for seeing them depart and return on Saturday.
I don`t finish work till 1700,and they will almost certainly have landed well before that.

I might head over to the 'Fergus on Saturday, will see what the weather is like first-I don`t want to get a drenching.

The Yakovlev`s would be good to see as well, especially with the City backdrop, but I'm afraid in my case fast jets win every time.

Made the trip to Carrickfergus where the weather was a disappointing dull & grey.

First to arrive was the Sea King which after a couple of passes landed in front of the Castle.

Tornados arrived at 1pm and did a pass as a pair and then several solo passes. I'd moved down on to the harbour wall where I had a completely clear view, however this placed me directly under their flight path.

Great to see the Tonka hasn't lost its touch, with every pass it was setting off the alarms on all the cars parked nearby
 :LOL

The organisers had, in spite of the weather, put on a great selection of military hardware. There were WWII anti-aircraft guns, a jeep with a mounted machine gun, a troop transport and two camps, one American and one German, showing various weapons, tents, medical equipment, anti-tank obstacles, and volunteers dressed as the various soldiers. It was very well done although I don't know how they decided who would be the Germans  ;)

The modern day military was represented in the form of a light artillery piece, which they fired at 12 noon (kinda like Edinburgh), a Scimitar tank, supply trucks, a Navy Patrol Boat (HMS Pursuer) and a new Coyote tactical support vehicle (TSV) along with representatives from the Army, Navy, and Marine Commandos.

All in all a nice couple of hours, which was made even better by the fact that I left the car in Belfast and got the train so no traffic hassles  ;D
