RAF Leuchars Show 2011
« on: July 20, 2011, 09:32:06 PM »
Mrs Turnip and I are thinking about going to Leuchars for this years show-looks like it could be the last,as it was announced it is to close in 2013. :(
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-14182729
Anyone here ever been?
I was wondering if the sun is in your eyes (if it come`s out) on the flightline.
Probably too late to get tickets, but might just wing it and find somewhere to watch if that`s do-able.

Hi AT,

I went to last years show and am booked for this years. With the base closing I'll be curious to see whether the show moves to another base or is cancelled.

Flightline for the show is West to East so yes the sun will be in your eyes. Unfortunately last years show was blessed with good weather. Having said that I didn't really notice it all that much, plus the odd cloud helped  ;D

Tickets for the show only went on sale at the start of July. I got mine through the airshow website, link below.

Thanks,-I had a look at the site already.

The flying and static display`s seem well down on last years list of participants. :-\

I will probably decide nearer the show date.

Maybe they'll switch it to Lossie? I was in the West Highlands a few years back and heard a lot of fast jets, but only managed to see two GR4s blasting up Glencoe one evening, very fast and low!

Sadly there will be no airshows in scotland next year apart from the EAST FORTUNE display. I was asking a mate if they would get another airbase to get a display and the simple answer was  "NO" so unfortunatley this will be LEUCHARS last ever display. The reason why there isn't much is because everyone was informed that there was no airshow this year because it was clossing. So when they did decide to hold it they didn't get the response they hoped for.  The red arrows will display as a farewell to LEUCHARS.
All theese worlds are yours except EUROPA

I went to RAF Leuchars a right few years back , It wasn't bad but the Field of View wasn't that good there u had to look up out outwards and it was packed.!!! Portrush is an excellent FOV but the CAA would need stop nannying the planes and bring them in closer to the crowd. Like the F16 over the weekend!!

I've been to Leuchars at least two dozen times in the last 40 years and its an excellent show with a very clear field of view, depending not where you stand, but what time you get to the rope.   There is no comparison to Portrush where you need binoculars to see some of the exhibits!    Last year I thought some of the items were displaying for the residents of Rathlin, and with regards to closeness - just wait til something goes wrong, then you'll thank the CAA for their wisdom.

You might be right about the safety but portrush keeps going further out each year  next thing the you cant see them at all. anyway at leuchars I only went there the once and probably was badly positioned for it it was like 9 years ago so memory probably foggy but im comparing it to portrush where it by and large doesn't matter where you be except ramore head now that matters!

Well my wet gear got a full workout today  :'(

We had one heavy shower and one total cloudburst which along with the other bad weather over England resulted in several aircraft not making it to Leuchars, most notably the BBMF but also the Red Falcons. This resulted in a late start to the flying display and several gaps between acts.

Best display, in my opinion, was the Patrouille de France although their announcer could do with dialling back on the voice-over. The Grippen did a brilliant take-off in the pouring rain which I missed as I'd put the camera away.

Took over 700 pics in spite of the weather.

Will upload some over the next couple of days, when I get back to NI  ;D

The organisers learned from last years traffic problems as there were no problems getting to the airfield (at 8:30 this morning) or getting away again.

Mrs Turnip and I went to RAF Leuchars Show, wasn`t sure if would be able to make it,due to my on going kidney stone problem.
1st time we had been to the show and have to say I was very impressed with it.There was one really bad shower around 2pm just as two Norwegian DH Vampire`s went up to display;they managed a few very close formation passes before the rain became very heavy and they landed.
For some reason the Czech Air Force Saab Gripen went up after them, but the rain was so heavy,I doubt many people were watching, and regrettably it landed after a few passes. This was a real shame as it was a display I was looking forward to seeing, after watching it practise the previous evening from our B+B.

The display`s were due to start at 11am but didn`t get going until 12.30 ish;this was due to the potential arrival of some more participants that had been delayed by the poor weather over much of England.

Missing were the BBMF,SeaKing SAR Demo,Team Bretling Wingwalkers and the RAF Falcons parachute team.
But the rest of the show was fantastic and we were treated to some amazing displays by the Dutch F-16,Belgian F-16,Tornado GR4 Role Demo,Hawk T1,Tucano T1,SE5a,Catalina,DH Vampire x2,RV8r`s,The Blades,The Patrollile de France and The Red Arrows.

The Reds performance was very emotional, and all credit to the team for performing at all.I didn`t expect them to do a full display, and the audience applauded the team as they landed-very touching to hear the many tributes to Flt LT Jon Egging (RED 4).

The Vulcan display was very impressive, the commentator said "Be afraid,Be very afraid-behold the Mighty Vulcan!" and mighty it was;the wail of the 4 RR Engines was something to behold;unfortunatly full power isn`t used during the display, would be nice to have seen a touch and go,just to feel the ground shake!

Took plenty of photos and will post some up later in the week.
