Canon 1100D & Canon EF 70-300 f4-5.6 IS usm
« on: October 12, 2011, 06:08:53 PM »
I have been thinking about this camera and lens for sometime. Can anyone advise me. I think I'm happy enough about the camera ( I propose to buy a 50mm fixed lens for portraits) and hope that the 70-300 lens will be sufficient for aircraft without chopping and changing lenses in the future. All comments appreciated.

Can't advise much about the camera as mine is a 500d but I have that lens and it's a decent piece of kit. Like all things however, I'm now thinking of the next stage and a 500mm! Make sure you get the 70-300 with the IS as it makes a considerable difference. Any images I've take with it have been pretty sharp (and I've also used it with macro tubes and the images were pretty good there too!!)

I've not heard much details about the Canon 1100D however it is the replacement of the 1000D which was a respectable camera so the 1100D should be naturally as good.

The Canon 70-300mm IS USM was my first lens, and despite selling it to get myself the Canon 100-400mm and a 70-200mm F4, I still miss it from time to time as it performed well and produced some nice pin sharp images, especially in decent light.

Length wise, 70-300mm is a good length for use at BFS, BHD and DUB, and pretty much anywhere else in the UK so no problems there.

With a few exceptions all these photos were taken with the 70-300mm

It's a lovely lens but to be honest when it comes to aviation you can always do with a few more mm :)

Edit: Sorry mine is the non-IS version.
