As the saying goes "any landing you can walk away from is a good one."

One question though:

Given that the plane landed gear up, would the pilot have still been able to control its direction or was it just momentum carrying it in a straight line?

I'd say he still had some directional control using the rudder. However I don't know at what speed the rudder would become useless.

Superb piece of flying by the crew although it is something that is routinely trained for,when it comes to doing it for real,you couldn`t ask for much better.
The rudder will operate down to a fairly low speed,and the runway would have been treated with foam to reduce sparks etc.
The flight crew deserve the highest praise possible.

Phoa! Impressive! I skipped over all the LOT Emergency landing threads this morning before work thinking it was nothing serious, now I see this. I'm glad everyone's ok. And of course you can always rely on the Polish aviation photographers to get good pictures of the event.
