Without a vapour trail it is very hard to see the aircraft-you need to look ahead of the engine sound.

True, I have also found that it is alot easier if you take the picture with the sun behind you rather than in front!

As odd as it may look, wearing sunglasses helps a lot when spotting aircraft with no contrails!
