Portrush Airshow
« Reply #26 on: August 01, 2008, 02:03:10 AM »
Hey guys, I've been tracing this thread for a while waiting patentially for more details on aircraft visiting Portrush this year. Glad to hear the vulcan is scheduled to come however I am slightly worried about it going tech during the weekend.

Anyhow brilliant to see the Red Arrows will be there both days. Without a doubt the highlights of the weekend due to the photo opportunites they provide. I have recently bought myself a high end point and shoot camera so I am looking forward to using it all weekend in Portrush. For me, the left cliff whilst facing the sea is the best choice as it is almost upon the display line at the tip.

Fingers crossed that the weather is good for the weekend however I predict rain and clouds will dampen things :(

Might see some of you there, ciao for now

Hey Casper (Dale?)

Nice site you have here, I'll try and pass on a good word to a few Irish aviation friends to come and join.

It'll be great to hear the Vulcan after years of listening to my Dad talk about it.

Pitty the Enniskillen / Newtownards shows were not on this year. I guess every other year will have to do for now. I'm amazed at how they manage to put on the Portrush Airshow each year despite the fact that entry is free. Where does the money come from to pay for the display?

Thanks for the warm welcome,

Dave

Many thanks, that would be very much appreciated.

I would assume from advertising and sponsorship. Plus the fact that it probably pulls in some tourists (like ourselves :) ) who pump some money into the local economy.

I'm from Belfast so it will take me a good hour or two on the train to get to Portrush. I'm thinking for getting an early training and setting up a wind block (similar to a tent) on the cliff tops as it does get quite windy up there.

It does indeed. I can handle the wind, although it plays havoc with the photos but I absolutely detest the rain. Hopefully it will be nice :)

They are still negotiating 'fees' (or have increased what they were originally asking for).

Just got an email from one of the organisers to say that they (the Vulcan) had upped the appearance price and was outside the budget for the show so I'm afraid it looks like we have lost her :(

That is terrible, the organiser off the airshow was on Q97.2 and said that the vulcan was guaranteed to be there, but was not sure on what day is was comming, now what do they do if they haven't the money, i know a lot of ex r.a.f. personnel who are comming over to see the vulcan, lets hope they can come to some agreement.

When was that? They lost the Vulcan this morning. I honestly think they (the Vulcan) have shot themselves in the foot - they could be loosing out on potential donations by pricing themselves out of the show. They need donations from all over the country and not from a select few (ok thousands) who have a chance to see her fly.

Unfortunatley the Vulcan project has gobbled up a HUGE amount of money since it began - and it will require similar amounts of cash to sustain it.
They are probably trying to 'milk' the remaining shows this year for all they can get (due to the cancelled shows and loss of revenue on the mainland)

Not worth it in my opinion.

Huge loss to the Northern Irish aviation fans as well as to the Vulcan to the Skies team. They are shooting themselves in the foot. With the Vulcan not going to the airshow, the line up consists of nothing fantastic with the exception of the Red Arrows. Any chance that the airshow organisers could get the Eurofighter in with the remaining money originally ment for the vulcan?

There's plenty of good stuff along with the Reds - the Blades,Team Guinot, all the helis' etc  ;).I doubt they would be able to book a Eurofighter at this late stage  :(

I read elsewhere that the cost of the Vulcan appearing was to be shared with a show on the mainland - but they pulled out, leaving Portrush having to bear the full cost (so it's not the organisers fault)
These are just rumours however and need to be confirmed.

Team Guinot are fantastic, hopefully they'll have all 4 of them flying and not two, and the blades are alright, but everything else doesn't really stand out for me with the exception of Red Arrows and the Dakota (which I missed a flight in afew weeks ago due to two cancelled flights!), de Havilland Devon (first time I'll see one flying).

Now that I'm looking through the list again, theres another aircraft missing! The aircraft with the three vertical tail fins. Sorry I've fotgotten it's name, but it's no longer on the list. :-[

No particular large aircraft this year now that the Vulcan is missing. A Nimrod would be nice, like the 2003 show although they may still be grounded. Past aircraft I've enjoyed are B-17, B-25, Avro Lancaster and the Douglas DC-6.

A Dutch F16 would be a nice alternative to the Eurofighter - maybe next year  ;D ;)

Unfortunatley with commitments abroad the RAF is concentrating on the larger 'Role Demos' at the bigger airshows, with only the Reds and the small trainers available for some of the smaller shows.

Let's just hope the weather plays ball and we get two full shows 8) 8)

Have to agree that there is still a great line up this year. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Merlin again and the RN Black Cats.

Probably just the two as they are also displaying in England on the same weekend.

Ahh yes, I was downstairs and remembered the name, so came upsatirs again to post the name but you beat me to it. Real shame the Pioneer has been cut from the display. It's a fairly large aircraft. I'm sure the airshow organisers are pushing hard to get more aircraft as the Vulcans replacement, however theres little they can do with a month to go. A real shame.

On a side note Casper, look at how well this years Portrush thread is doing in comparisons to last years thread, and the airshow hasn't even taken place yet!

I understand the RAF Sea Kings are on 'standby' for SAR duties but have they ever made it to any of our local shows (Portrush/Ekn/Nards)?
I've never seen one although they are advertised every year.
