Hoorah!

I think this is the first modern airliner since the 777 that has really interested me.  Not sure why... perhaps because it has been so low-key that it is still enigmatic.

Compared to the A380 and 787 that seemed to have press releases every day for years.

Edit: though it was only this year that I decided the 777 isn't ugly.

I'm with you on that one, and the thing that makes it so much more interesting is the fact that it's an Airbus - not Boeing! ;D

After many years finally it flies! I find it more interesting than the B787 as there's less media coverage than the B787 which is a shame to be quite honest. Is 10AM BST or CEST?

CEST

Of course it would look much better as a trijet, but such is life

The French ATC strike might have put paid to that.

Thankfully it didn't, I'm watching the first flight live on YouTube now, the Aircraft is in the air!

I believe the strike was cancelled early,it would have been a bit embarressing for Airbus`s new project to be delayed by their own French ATC.
Must say its a very sleek looking machine, much better looking than the "big forehead" on the A380,which I think is an ugly brute.

I agree with you AT, the A350, isn't in my view, one of the best looking of aircraft, and only looks aesthetically pleasing from certain angles. The B787-9 is much better looking! The A380 is aptly described as a whale. Looks are one thing, but it's performance and economics that count!

Modern aerodynamics seems to be moving away from sleekness in many aspects, the newer High Speed Trains from France (AGV), Japan, China, and Spain are not as good looking as the previous generation, some of the Japanese/Spanish ones being fairly ugly.

I noticed an 'exit' above the cockpit and wondered what the purpose is. Is it for emergency evacuations for the flight crew? Here are two pictures I found online with the first one showing one of the test crew poking their head out and the second pic of when the A350 was under construction.

Thanks  :)

Spot on!

The A350 is also the first Airbus to do away with opening direct vision cockpit windows for flightcrew emergency evacuation, with an escape hatch incorporated in the flightdeck roof instead.

Just 16 months later and the A350-900 has been awarded certification by EASA!  That was quick.

http://easa.europa.eu/system/files/dfu/EASA_TCDS_A_151_Issue-01.pdf

Maximum capacity 440 passengers, operating altitude 43,100 ft.  But not terribly useful to airlines yet as no ETOPS clearance.
