At least 11 people were killed after a UPS cargo plane crashed during take off from UPS World Port, Muhammad Ali International Airport, Louisville Kentucky, on Tuesday evening.

The NTSB reported that CCTV surveillance footage showed the left engine of the aircraft "detaching from the wing during the takeoff roll".

When I read that the left engine had come off during take-off, my first thought was that it sounds like a repeat of American Airlines Flight 191. That crash, which involved a DC-10 and happened at Chicago O'Hare in May 1979, was due to the left engine breaking off during the take-off roll and destroying the left wing hydraulics, making the plane uncontrollable :(

Totally tragic.  There is footage of a guy sitting in his truck at the end of the runway - the fireball just misses him.

I think in this case, after the engine detached, it sent shrapnel into the No.2 engine, rendering it useless - so there was not even enough thrust to get airborne, given they had a full fuel load and cargo.

There were rumours the flight was delayed 2hrs as there was work being carried out on the No.1 engine - the NTSB stated there was no evidence of this.

Terrifying accident, odd the NTSB would dismiss rumours that one of the engine's had some work done, delaying the flight,so soon. They will look at everything and everyone involved.

Looks like a possible structural failure, those big freighter's operate under tough conditions, and being an older type, metal fatigue may have played a part.
