Title: Battle of Britain (the film)
Post by: sneaky_nikon on Apr 06, 2024, 22:22
Not sure where else to put this.   Would there be much interest in a cinema screening?

Can you organise one?

Great Film, much of the interest in Warbirds in the UK came from this movie, as a side note it was largely made by the people behind the Bond movies at the time.No CGI anywhere near it.lol

Strand Cinema might be an option for a viewing, there used to be a small private cinema (not mucky stuff) out near Comber, it was called The Tudor, run by the Spence family but it closed due to Covid, it was renamed Excelsior at some point.

Great line in one of the action sequences, when a German gunner spots a group of Spitfires coming in to attack, he exclaims in a thick Cockney accent " Spitfire ", always makes me grin, its a minor detail but funny.

Long story short, I did somebody a good turn last week and they offered me a cinema for an evening. I think it might be the Comber venue AT mentioned. Asked for a film choice I nominated BoB and they seemed to think that was doable. So I was just gauging interest here, as my interested friends wouldn't fill out a row.

BTW Strand is closing for renovations, they had a competition for 'last screenings' before the current seetup closes and I nominated BoB for that too, I didn't win.

With my schedule, likely to be into July. It's no biggie in terms of people committing or anything, I just really don't want to end up doing it for half a dozen lads.

I'd be up for this and probably could talk my brother into it.

Update on this, I rang the guy in question a couple of times from France on another topic and got answering machine & no call back.  Tried again today and got 'number unavailable'.  Not good.

I'll ask a mutual friend, but should this not work out as planned, I'll consult the Beanbag Cinema people about a hire. Not their usual trade but I've kinda got myself into the mindset for it now.

Aye, I shall sort something out. Never seen it on the big screen and I rather fancy it.
One caveat I may throw out is that I've also a small, personal fund-raising project on the go currently for a local charity (which would fit with the film) so I may combine the two. On the other hand, I might not as it might complicate things more than I want to.  The forum will be informed!

I certainly would have no problem contributing something to charity, and I'm sure there would be others.

Knocked back by the first people I contacted, but they have suggested someone else to talk to. Which I will do and keep you informed. Bear with me on this, I'm on a mission!

Oookay, again apologies for procrastination, I've been putting together a Clansman HF station for myself and have ignored everything else.  Visited the Courthouse in Bangor this evening for an Arnhem anniversary showing of Theirs Is The Glory and made a tentative approach to staff for making this happen, result being "no reason why not" but the right people to make it happen weren't actually there. This is likely to be the route I'll take if I can get the nod when the right people are there!

Aaaaand... All Change again.  I have now secured a definite from a private cinema, very small place - Just less than 30 seats total but, fitting for the show, decked out in '40s style.  Anticipate a charge of a fiver. People still interested? I can either try and do it rapidly, or early in the new year as I'm out of the country for most of December. Thoughts?

Right, date?

I'm thinking January is quiet for most and it seems to suit a couple of my guys.

Never thought this would be so tricky, but I've a host here who is foursquare behind the idea and will be watching himself, so finally a 'go'.
